Job summary

South Dakota Bureau of Human Resources seeks an Intern - Unit Management for the Summer session with the Department of Corrections in Sioux Falls, SD. The role supports daily inmate program operations and housing unit management, under supervision of the Hiring Manager, Travis Uecker, with on-site duties at Jameson Prison Annex.

Applicants must be current part-time or full-time students and may be preferred if they are juniors or seniors from SD institutions.

Qualifications

• Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time or full-time student during the upcoming or immediately preceding semester.
• Preference may be given to juniors/seniors, South Dakota residents and students of South Dakota institutions.
• Successful candidates may be subject to a background investigation and drug screening.

Responsibilities

• Maintains contact with convicted felons to assist day-to-day living and organize activities.
• Facilitates work and program options to support behavioral change.
• Organizes schedules, coordinates activities, and manages a housing unit caseload.
• Assists with individual and family problems, scheduling, parole plans, and institution adjustment.
• Coordinates offender programs to ensure compliance with policies and memos.
• Assigns work, conducts payroll, and processes grievances.
• Performs unit orientation, inmate interviews, and documents housing assignments and program eligibility.
• Serves as staff representative for restrictive housing hearings and disciplinary hearings.
• Performs general security tasks and can cover delegated Unit Case Manager duties.

Position Description

Maintains daily contact with convicted felons to assist them with their day-to-day living in a prison or a trusty unit and to organize their activities while providing motivation and guidance; facilitates work and program options so that they may receive opportunities to learn how to change their criminal behavior.

Job Functions

• Organizes the schedules, coordinates the activities, and manages events for a caseload of offenders to ensure the smooth operation of a housing unit.
• Assists offenders with individual and family problems, Individual Program Directives, scheduling, transition plans, parole plans, and institutional adjustment to help them to understand and change their behavior.
• Coordinates and manages unit offender programs to ensure compliance with department policies and institutional operations memoranda.
• Assign offenders to work assignments, and conduct monthly payroll.
• Investigate and process offender grievances.
• Conducts unit orientation and inmate interviews and completes documentation used to determine cell/room assignment, classification, program eligibility, and the priority for scheduling follow-on meetings with inmates.
• Serves as the staff representative for restrictive housing hearings, and for inmates charged with major rule infractions at disciplinary hearings to provide for the security of the unit, the safety of the staff and inmates, and the rehabilitation of the offenders.
• Performs general security functions as needed by the facility, including but not limited to cell/area searches, emergency response, and rounds.
• Performs the delegated Unit Case Manager and Housing Captain duties in their absence.
• Performs other work as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.

All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.

Successful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a background investigation. An arrest/conviction record will not necessarily bar employment. Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a drug screening.
