Job summary

State of South Dakota's Department of Transportation in Brookings is seeking an Intern - Transportation/Construction Engineering Intern for the Summer session (May–August). This role supports design, construction, or maintenance of state highway projects and offers hands-on field and office experience.

Ideal candidates are enrolled full-time or part-time students, with one year completed in their program; preference to South Dakota residents and students from SD institutions.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled as a part-time or full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply.
• By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
• Preference may be given to applicants who are juniors/seniors, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.

• APPLICANT MUST BE A CURRENT PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME STUDENT (MINIMUM OF 6 CREDIT HOURS) IN UPCOMING SEMESTER OR IN THE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING SEMESTER.

Position Description

Interns will be involved in a variety of engineering related activities performed in support of design, construction or maintenance of state highway construction projects. Interns will further their knowledge and abilities in the civil engineering field. Specific duties may include participating on survey crew, materials testing, project inspection, data collection and verification, or other engineering related activities. Duties are primarily performed outdoors and are physical in nature.
