Job summary

The South Dakota Department of Transportation is seeking an Intern - Pavement Management Engineering Intern in Pierre for Summer. The role involves hands-on pavement distress surveying, QA/QC processes, and data analysis support under supervision of the Pavement Management Engineer.

Responsibilities

• Conduct pavement distress survey quality control/quality assurance on highway pavements.
• Identify and quantify pavement distresses on various types of highway pavements.
• Assist Pavement Management Engineer with data analysis outputs from the Pavement Management System.
• Training provided by the DOT; no prior training required.
• Position may require overnight stays; typically five 8-hour days per week.

Position Title: Intern - Pavement Management Engineering Intern

Minimum Salary: $22.74 (Non-Engineer Students) and $25.08 (Engineer Students)

• APPLICANT MUST BE A CURRENT PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME STUDENT (MINIMUM OF 6 CREDIT HOURS) IN UPCOMING SEMESTER OR IN THE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING SEMESTER.

Position Description

The intern will participate in conducting pavement distress survey quality control / quality assurance on various types of highway pavements. The intern will be trained on how to identify and quantify pavement distresses on various types of highway pavements. The Intern may assist the Pavement Management Engineer with some data analysis outputs from the Pavement Management System and other programs in the planning squad. All training is provided by the DOT and no previous training or knowledge needed. The position may require overnight stays and typically works five 8 hour days each week.

Preference will be given to students majoring in civil engineering. Preference will be given to students with GIS mapping experience.

Qualifications

Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.

All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
