Nevada State University invites applications for the position of Intern - Public Affairs.

Core Responsibilities
  • Support presidential, public affairs and university communications efforts
  • Assist with drafting and editing campus communications, announcements, briefing materials and other written content.
  • Conduct research and gather information to support presidential remarks, talking points and communications.
  • Assist with communications related to university priorities, initiatives and issues affecting Nevada State and higher education.
  • Assist with public affairs, government relations and community engagement
  • Research higher education, government and public policy issues relevant to Nevada State University.
  • Assist with preparing background materials and briefings for meetings with community leaders, elected officials, government partners and other external stakeholders.
  • Help track legislative, governmental and community issues that may affect the university.
  • Support university efforts to strengthen relationships with community and public-sector partners.
  • Assist with digital communications and university storytelling
  • Help develop content highlighting university programs, events, students, faculty and staff.
  • Assist with content for university digital platforms, including web, email and social media.
  • Identify potential stories and gather information, quotes and other content from members of the campus community.
  • Support presidential, university and community events
  • Assist with planning and coordinating events involving the Office of the President.
  • Help prepare event materials, communications, guest information and logistical materials.
  • Provide on-site communications and event support as needed.
  • Assist with media relations and communications research
  • Help monitor media coverage and identify relevant news, public affairs and higher education trends.
  • Assist with maintaining media lists and organizing media-related materials.
  • Conduct background research to support press releases, media responses and other communications projects.
  • Provide special project and administrative support
  • Assist with special projects and initiatives coordinated through the Office of the President.
  • Participate in communications and public affairs planning meetings and regular check-ins.
  • Organize project materials and track assignments as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be in good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Must be enrolled as a degree seeking student with a minimum of 6 credits in the current or upcoming semester at Nevada State.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employment-related visas).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Students who are majoring in Communication, Visual Media, History, History - Pre-Law, Interdisciplinary Studies, Business and Criminal Justice.
  • Students pursuing a related minor, such as Communication, Creative Writing, Visual Media or Business, are also encouraged to apply.
  • Coursework or experience in public speaking, professional writing, journalism, digital media, research methods, government, public policy, marketing, graphic design or multimedia production would benefit a student in this role.
  • Strong writing, editing, research and verbal communication skills, along with attention to detail, organization and an interest in public affairs, government, media, higher education or community engagement.
  • Experience with student government, a student publication, social media, event planning, community service or a government or nonprofit organization would also be valuable.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Canva, social media platforms, photography, video production or content management systems.
Work Hours

This position will work 10-15 hours per week with a flexible schedule Monday through Friday during regular university business hours. The specific schedule will be coordinated with the selected student based on their class schedule and the department’s needs. Occasional attendance at university events outside the intern’s regular schedule may be requested with advance notice. Student employees can work up to 19.5 hours per week.

Hourly Rate

$14.00 per hour
