Job summary

The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) is seeking an Environmental Engineer Intern for the Environmental Services Department in Lansing, Michigan. This full-time summer internship runs May 17, 2027 to August 13, 2027, with a pay rate of $23.00 per hour.

The intern will learn under a mentor, supporting environmental compliance activities, data collection, field inspections, and limited lab work, while gaining exposure to SAP and SharePoint-based processes.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution with an emphasis on environmental engineering, chemistry, or science related field.
• Junior or senior status during the summer of 2027.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 and enrollment in fall 2027.

Responsibilities

• Assist with environmental compliance activities, record retention, and file review.
• Publish tank and chemical inventories to the SharePoint page.
• Develop SharePoint forms for data collection and reporting.
• Perform field work including emergency response and inspections; limited lab work.

The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has an opening for an Environmental Engineer Intern in our Environmental Services Department.

Position Summary:

Job Type: Full-Time Summer Internship

Dates: May 17, 2027 - August 13, 2027

Pay Rate: $23.00 per hour.

The BWL Environmental Services Department is responsible for overseeing compliance with environmental regulations pertaining to air, water, waste, remediation and drinking water. The Environmental Engineer Intern will learn from, and be supervised by, a mentor of the Environmental Services Department.

Essential Functions:

• The intern will work in the Environmental Compliance and Laboratory teams assisting with:
  • Creating procedures and checklists to assist with various environmental compliance activities, record retention and file review.
  • Publishing tank and chemical inventories to the SharePoint page.
  • Developing SharePoint form for data collection (e.g., SESC inspection reports, or Spill Incident Reporting Forms).
  • Perform field work - assist with emergency response and inspections.
  • Up to 4 hours working in the environmental laboratory consisting of Quanti-Tray analysis (bacteria count) and prepping glassware.

• The intern is expected to:
  • Utilizes standard office software (i.e., spreadsheet, word-processing, database) and SAP.
  • Attend training and safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by the BWL or government agency such as MIOSHA.
  • Comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
  • Have predictable and reliable attendance.

Job Specifications:

• Currently enrolled in anaccredited educational institutionwith an emphasis on environmental engineering, chemistry, or science related field with junior or senior status during the summer of 2027.
• Must be enrolled in fall classes 2027.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0.

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for the majority of the working day. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office environment, including the use of stairs. Constantly operates a computer and other office equipment. Ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen. Must frequently communicate with other departments and employees both verbally and in writing. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/below knee level or reach overhead. The person in this position needs to move about in industrial environments and on uneven terrain occasionally. May be required to recognize small numbers, letters, symbols, color on prints, and operate field instruments/equipment.

Works in a temperature-controlled office environment, with occasional work in outdoor weather conditions and industrial environments.

Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).
