The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) is offering a full-time summer internship for an HR Intern in Lansing, MI. The role focuses on recruitment, onboarding, HRIS updates in Workday, and data analysis with MS Office tools, SAP usage, and collaboration across the HR team.

Students enrolled in a Business Management/HR program (junior/senior) with a 3.0+ GPA are invited to apply for this 2027 summer internship schedule, May 17 to August 13.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution in a Business Management program focused on Human Resources with junior or senior status during the summer 2027.
• Must be enrolled in fall classes 2027.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0.

Responsibilities

• Assist with recruitment and onboarding activities including posting jobs, candidate coordination, interview scheduling, offers/releases.
• Update HRIS data using Workday; maintain accurate personnel records.
• Provide routine reports to HR Leadership and communicate findings professionally.
• Collaborate on HR projects and process improvements with team members.
• Follow BWL Safety Manual and applicable policies during all activities.

The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has an opening for a Human Resources Intern, located in Lansing, MI.

Position Summary:

Job Type: Full-Time Summer Internship Dates: May 17, 2027 - August 13, 2027 Pay Rate: $23.00 per hour.

The Human Resources Intern will be focused on collaborating with others on projects such as: Recruitment and onboarding to include, but not limited to: Job Postings Candidate Coordination Interview / Scheduling Offer / Release Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) Updates using Workday Labor Relations Employee Engagement

Essential Functions:

• Ability to meet and correspond with leaders and employees throughout the organization to conduct surveys and complete data collection of current processes, utilizing MS Team's video conferencing, phone conferences, email and face to face options.
• Utilization of Microsoft Office programs such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Visio to document and analyze data collected from various sources throughout the organization.
• Obtain detailed knowledge and prepare documentation of current HR processes and workflows.
• Provide weekly reports of progress to HR Leadership.
• Make recommendations to HR Leadership on findings as applicable.
• Professional communication.
• Utilizes standard office software (i.e., spreadsheet, word-processing, database) and SAP.
• Required to follow BWL Safety Manual and wear personal protective equipment for all field work.
• Attends training and safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by the BWL or government agency such as MIOSHA.
• Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
• Predictable and reliable attendance.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:

The physical demands described here represent those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office environment, including the use of stairs. Constantly operates a computer and other office equipment. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/below knee level or reach overhead. The person in this position needs to move about in industrial environments and on uneven terrain occasionally. May be required to recognize small numbers, letters, symbols, color on prints, and operate field instruments/equipment. Works in a temperature-controlled office environment, with occasional work in outdoor weather conditions and industrial environments. Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).
