Job summary

The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) in Lansing, MI, is seeking an Internal Audit Intern for the Internal Audit Department. This full-time summer internship runs from May 17, 2027 to August 13, 2027, with a pay rate of $23.00 per hour.

The intern will assist in establishing processes to ensure compliance with new internal audit standards, writing draft procedures, and learning under a mentor. SAP experience and use of standard office software are expected.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in an accredited educational institution with a focus on Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, or a related field with junior or senior status during the summer of 2027.
• Must be enrolled in fall classes 2027.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0.

Responsibilities

• Assist in planning and executing audit engagements, including collecting and analyzing audit evidence and preparing workpapers.
• Support issue tracking, follow-up on audit findings, and monitor remediation efforts.
• Participate in risk assessments, control evaluations, and related research on industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
• Perform data analysis to identify trends or anomalies and contribute to audit reports and presentations.
• Provide general support to the Internal Audit team and assist with specific projects to improve workflow efficiency.

The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has an opening for an Internal Audit Intern in the Internal Audit Department, located in Lansing, MI.

Position Summary

Job Type: Full-Time Summer Internship

Dates: May 17, 2027 - August 13, 2027

Pay Rate: $23.00 per hour.

The Internal Audit intern will assist in establishing processes and procedures within the department to ensure compliance with new internal audit standards. This will include creating and writing draft processes and procedures. Assisting with comprehensive organizational risk assessment and internal audits. The intern will learn from and be supervised by a mentor in the Internal Audit Department.

Essential Functions

• Assist in planning and executing audit engagements, including collecting and analyzing audit evidence and preparing workpapers.
• Support issue tracking, follow-up on audit findings, and monitor remediation efforts.
• Participate in risk assessments, control evaluations, and related research on industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
• Perform data analysis to identify trends or anomalies and contribute to audit reports and presentations.
• Provide general support to the Internal Audit team and assist with the Optro Analytics project to improve workflow efficiency.
• Support additional projects that Internal Audit is working on at the time of internship.
• Research and assist in implementing audit processes.
• Utilizes standard office software (i.e., spreadsheet, word-processing, database) and SAP.
• Required to follow BWL Safety Manual and wear personal protective equipment for all field location visits.
• Attends training and safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by the BWL or government agency such as MIOSHA.
• Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
• Predictable and reliable attendance.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for the majority of the working day. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office environment, including the use of stairs. Constantly operates a computer and other office equipment. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/below knee level or reach overhead. The person in this position needs to move about in industrial environments and on uneven terrain occasionally. May be required to recognize small numbers, letters, symbols, color on prints, and operate field instruments/equipment.

Works in a temperature-controlled office environment, with occasional work in outdoor weather conditions and industrial environments.

Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).
