The Lansing Board of Water & Light is offering two Electrical Engineering Intern positions in the Electric System Integrity Department for the summer of 2027 in Lansing, MI.

These full-time summer internships run May 17, 2027 to August 13, 2027, with a pay rate of $23.00 per hour. Interns will learn from a mentor and gain experience in planning studies, protection, and system design tasks within a public utility.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in an accredited engineering program as a junior or senior in summer 2027.
• Must be enrolled in fall 2027 classes.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with internal departments on various projects as assigned.
• Assist with planning studies and recommendations to improve system reliability.
• Work with team members to gain experience in distribution and transmission planning.
• Utilize SAP and standard office software.
• Follow BWL Safety Manual and wear PPE for field work.
• Attend training and safety awareness sessions as required.
• Support Asset Management System improvements.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has openings for two Electrical Engineering Interns in our Electric System Integrity Department, located in Lansing, MI.

Position Summary:

Job Type: Full-Time Summer Internship

Dates: May 17, 2027 - August 13, 2027

Pay Rate: $23.00 per hour.

Electric System Integrity is responsible for engineering, designing and problem solving for the Electric Utility transmission, substation, and distribution assets of BWL. Potential projects include system load flow planning, protection and coordination studies, electrical equipment review and specifications, overhead pole line and underground cable design, and substation control projects. The ESI Intern will also help with material specifications, system planning studies for the BWL’s Strategic Plan, and system improvement sketches including voltage cut overs. The ESI Intern will learn from, and be supervised by, a mentor of the Electric Systems Integrity Department.

Essential Functions:

• Collaborate with the internal departments on various projects as assigned.
• Some potential projects available to the intern(s)
• Intern 1:
  • Working with team members to learn distribution system planning, basic design tasks, and distribution standards and materials applications.
  • The intern will be assisting with running planning studies and recommending various solutions to improve system reliability for our customers.
• Intern 2:
  • Working with various team members to get experience with the transmission planning and system protection side of our business.
  • This includes assisting with running various transmission planning studies and performing system protection studies and recommending device settings.
• Utilizes standard office software (i.e., spreadsheet, word-processing, database) and SAP.
• Required to follow BWL Safety Manual and wear personal protective equipment for all field work.
• Attends training and safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by the BWL or government agency such as MIOSHA.
• Participation in the continuous improvement of the Asset Management System.
• Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
• Predictable and reliable attendance.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Specifications:

• Currently enrolled in anaccredited educational institution in an engineering program (e.g., preference in civils/structural, but may include chemical, mechanical, industrial, reliability, electrical) with junior or senior status during the summer of 2027.
• Must be enrolled in fall classes 2027.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0.

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for the majority of the working day. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office environment, including the use of stairs. Constantly operates a computer and other office equipment. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/below knee level or reach overhead. The person in this position needs to move about in industrial environments and on uneven terrain occasionally. May be required to recognize small numbers, letters, symbols, color on prints, and operate field instruments/equipment.

Works in a temperature-controlled office environment, with occasional work in outdoor weather conditions and industrial environments.

Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).
