Job summary

The North Dakota Department of Transportation offers a paid, full-time summer internship for 2027. Interns will join a team performing highway construction, engineering and maintenance tasks, gaining hands-on experience in inspection, surveying, documentation and reporting.

You will learn to interpret plans, compute quantities and prepare pay quantity reports while working closely with project engineers. MicroStation will be part of your skill development and you will gain exposure to field

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in engineering technology, civil/construction engineering or similar undergraduate degree program.
• Requires ability to lift and carry a total weight of up to 50 pounds.
• Possession of a valid Class D Driver's License for travel within the state of North Dakota.
• Requires satisfactory completion of the interview process and successful completion of a job function screening.

Responsibilities

• Assist in construction inspection, surveying and field office work.
• Conduct field sampling and testing of construction materials and interpret project plans.
• Compute quantities, document project records and prepare project pay quantity reports.
• Develop familiarity with progressive estimates and work with project engineers, using MicroStation.

Job description

Must attach a copy of your unofficial transcript to be eligible for this internship. This is a temporary position with no paid benefits. All internships are paid full-time summer of 2027 positions.

Summary Of Work

Our team performs a wide range of duties, including highway construction, engineering, and administration, as well as roadway, bridge, and roadside maintenance. We also conduct traffic engineering, highway sign maintenance, materials testing, equipment and vehicle upkeep. The operation of rest areas and visitor centers within our district are also part of our district's responsibilities. This internship will provide a quality experience with construction inspection, survey and field office work. You will also conduct field sampling and testing of construction materials and interpret plans for the projects you are working on. Additionally, you will learn the skills of computing quantities, documentation of project records, preparing project pay quantity reports, and become familiar with progressive estimates. We utilize MicroStation and you will develop your knowledge and skill base with it too. You will work closely with project engineers and we will provide you an experience that will prepare you for a career as a civil/construction engineer.

Minimum Qualifications
