Job summary

Prairie State Generating Company invites college students to join a summer internship in the power generation industry. The program is paid, spans 12–13 weeks, and offers hands-on exposure to operations, maintenance, and engineering projects in a live power plant.

Interns will work under experienced engineers on control systems, power systems, data analysis, and CAD drafting, and will present their work to Plant Management at the end.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in a college program pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Must be in good academic standing.
• MUST be available for a 12-13 week program beginning in Mid/Late-May to Early/Mid-August.

Responsibilities

• Assist on Plant Operations, Maintenance and/or Engineering projects including optimization and improvement.
• Assist on Plant Control Systems (PLCs and DCS) with oversight from system engineers.
• Assist on Plant Power Systems with oversight from system engineers.
• Collect and interpret data to improve system functionality and efficiency.
• Understand electrical schematics, one-lines, connection drawings, and P&IDs.
• Prepare a presentation describing your work to Plant Management for end-of-internship.
• Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

Overview

Prairie State Generating Company is looking for college students who are interested in a summer intern program in the power generation industry. A limited number of internships are available for college students enrolled in specific curriculum. Participating as an intern will provide experience and exposure to state-of-the-art technology in an operating power plant. Student interns will receive industry experience, hands-on training, paid intern program and exposure to industry professionals.

Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following (other duties and responsibilities may be assigned):

• Working on Plant Operations, Maintenance and /or Engineering projects which include optimization and improvement projects.
• Working on Plant Control Systems (PLCs and DCS) with oversight from system engineers.
• Working on Plant Power Systems (High Voltage, Medium Voltage, and Low Voltage) with oversight from system engineers.
• Work on Data Collection and Interpretation to improve System Functionality and Efficiency.
• Develop an understanding of electrical schematics, one-lines, connection drawings, and P&IDs.
• Develop a presentation describing your work to Plant Management to be presented at the end of your internship.
• Regular and reliable attendance required.

Education/Experience

• To be considered, an individual MUST be enrolled in a college program and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering.

Knowledge of

Skills and Abilities

• Ability to clearly communicate with co-workers, supervisors and others.
• Ability to read and understand operating procedures.
• Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
• Ability to work unsupervised as required.
• Ability to enter confined spaces, climb ladders and wear respirators as needed.
• Ability to sit, stand, reach, stoop, and lift boxes weighing as much as 25 pounds.
• Proficiency in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

At Prairie State, the base pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this role is $25.00 per hour for the Undergraduate level and $28.00 per hour for the Graduate level.
