Job summary

College of the Desert District is seeking a Manager of Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) to plan, coordinate, and support comprehensive EHS programs across the district, ensuring CAL/OSHA and other regulations are met. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or Occupational Safety Technology, Environmental Science or Environmental Technology, Business, or a related field; five (5) years progressively responsible experience in a technical support environment with at least two (2) years in a supervisory, lead, or managerial role.
  • Associate’s degree in Fire Science or Occupational Safety Technology, Environmental Science or Environmental Technology or Human Resources, Business or a related field; seven (7) years progressively responsible experience in the field with at least two (2) years in a supervisory, lead, or managerial role.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and directs equipment, vehicle and cart maintenance program services; oversees licenses, insurance, approvals, and training programs for vehicles, carts and equipment; coordinates the cart training program.
  • Provides liaison between maintenance and College personnel; creates and processes work requests; plans, discusses and executes proposed projects to determine feasibility.
  • Coordinates diagnosis, maintenance, repair, or replacement of equipment including fleet, grounds, carts, energy management equipment, elevators, fire alarms and safety systems.
  • Oversees ergonomic program, assessments and accommodations coordination with Human Resources; coordinates training as needed.
  • Coordinates work with outside contractors, architects and engineers on EH&S projects; collaborates with leadership and insurers on risk and insurance matters; supports loss prevention strategies.
  • Train and guide faculty, managers and staff; conduct loss control and safety training; develop loss control training programs.
  • Coordinates inspections and servicing of fire extinguishers and safety equipment; assess facilities for appropriate fire extinguisher types based on risk.
  • Develop and implement training programs to promote a culture of professional, empathetic customer service across user interactions.
  • Assemble and maintain first aid and chemical spill kits; manage storage and inventory of safety equipment; install eye wash and first aid stations as needed.
  • Ensure CAL/OSHA compliance (IIPP, Hazard Communication, Bloodborne Pathogens, Workplace Violence Prevention); assist in accident investigations and reporting.
  • Coordinate hazardous and biological waste removal; ensure compliance with regulations and maintain OSHA logs.
  • Coordinate and produce safety signage and informational materials; coordinate labeling and tracking of safety equipment; distribute safety packets.
  • Serve as liaison to fire department and vendors; help design and maintain comprehensive EHS program; ensure compliance with laws and regs.
  • Extracts and analyzes data from systems; maintains reports and spreadsheets on environmental, health and safety programs; prepares presentations.
  • Assist with planning and monitoring departmental budget and annual reports; prepare required state, federal and local reports.
  • Stay current with trends and regulations in occupational, community and environmental health and safety; participate in training.
  • Chair or Co-Chair governance committees; participate in District Emergency Operations Team and Safety Committee.
