Job summary

Vaco by Highspring in San Jose, CA, seeks an Interim Assistant Controller to oversee core accounting operations and support timely financial reporting. Hybrid role requiring on-site work 3 days/week with potential for conversion to permanent position after approximately six months.

The role leads monthly close, reviews financial statements, ensures revenue recognition compliance, strengthens internal controls, and partners with business leaders to drive accurate reporting and process

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• CPA or active CPA progress recommended.
• 6+ years of progressive accounting experience with GL and close.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and revenue recognition.
• Experience with ERP systems and advanced Excel.

Interim Assistant Controller

Our client, a multi-entity services company, is seeking an Interim Assistant Controller to oversee core accounting operations and support accurate, timely financial reporting.

This role is hybrid, with on-site expectations of 3 days per week in San Jose, CA. This role has an anticipated duration of approximately six months, with potential for conversion to a permanent position.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily accounting operations and maintain the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger
• Lead monthly and quarterly close activities, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and variance analysis
• Prepare and review financial statements, management reports, and supporting schedules
• Evaluate service contracts and recurring arrangements to ensure appropriate revenue recognition and accounting treatment
• Analyze cost of sales, operating expenses, and other financial drivers to support accurate reporting and business decisions
• Maintain and enhance accounting policies, internal controls, and process documentation
• Support external audits by preparing schedules, coordinating requests, and serving as a key accounting contact
• Partner with operational and divisional leaders to provide financial insights and resolve accounting matters
• Support business integration activities, including financial consolidation, process alignment, and systems standardization
• Identify and implement improvements to accounting processes, reporting, systems, and close efficiency
• Lead, mentor, and develop accounting team members as appropriate

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or active CPA progress strongly preferred
• 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant responsibility for general ledger accounting and the financial close
• Experience within professional services, contract services, software, or another service-oriented business with recurring revenue arrangements
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, revenue recognition, cost-of-sales accounting, internal controls, and external audit requirements
• Hands-on leadership experience with ERP systems, advanced Excel, large datasets, and cross-functional process improvement initiatives
