Interdisciplinary Biologist/Physical Scientist (Data Management Specialist)

About

The movement toward open data has led to a need for increased data accessibility of federally funded research across U.S. agencies. However, increased access comes with challenges, which may include navigating federal policy, providing support for a wide array of data types and information products, while also carefully stewarding sensitive data. To address this growing need for data management, the U.S. Geological Survey Climate Adaptation Science Center will be hiring a GS-11/12 Data Scientist to join the CASC data team and serve as a technical resource on data management issues to advance the USGS mission. We are looking for someone who is experienced working within collaborative teams and has the right combination of technical expertise and innovative drive.

Position Description

CASC Data Scientists, housed within the National CASC, serve as data stewards to help make all CASC-funded data and research products publicly available. Data stewards work directly with funded researchers to develop Data Management Plans for CASC projects and to transition resulting data and information products into long-term CASC data repositories.

This posting is for one position across two job series: GS-0401-11/12 Biologist and GS-1301-11/12 Physical Scientist using direct hire authority. This will be a telework position with location negotiable within the US.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in planning and conducting comprehensive data management lifecycle activities.
  • Work with researchers to summarize and package their data and metadata for dissemination using standardized approaches.
  • Use tools and standards to review and approve data and metadata, create digital identifiers, and create public-friendly landing pages for the data.
  • Work with a variety of researchers and staff to create a positive and productive working environment.
  • Prepare presentations and briefings for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Provide regular feedback and status updates to leadership and researchers.
  • Track and manage the status of all funded projects and update as needed based on any change in status.
  • Work with sensitive data - including Tribes and Indigenous communities, threatened and endangered species, and social science data.
  • Modify and adapt standard data management techniques, processes, and procedures.

As a Data Management Scientist within the National Climate Adaptation Science Center, some of your duties will include:

  • Develop and oversee practices and procedures for the Center's data management workflow.
  • Coordinate and/or review data and metadata prior to approval.
  • Manage the preservation process, train Center stewards and other collaborators on data management procedures and best practices.
  • Review data management plans.
  • Operate a government vehicle as an incidental driver.
