Job summary

University of California, Berkeley is seeking an Academic Advisor for UGIS American Studies to support the major and minor programs and coordinate advising, events, and policy guidance. You will manage student records, help design degree plans, and assist with study abroad and graduate preparation, while collaborating with faculty and staff.

Applicants should have strong advising experience, knowledge of university policies, and the ability to coordinate large programs and events.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of academic advising, counseling techniques, and multiple majors, simultaneous degrees, colleges, and schools.
• Knowledge of institutional policies, procedures, and requirements.
• Judgment and decision–making skills; problem identification and original idea development.
• Administrative organization and project management skills with attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple projects with varying deadlines.
• Monitoring and assessing student experience for service and procedural improvements.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, including public speaking.

Responsibilities

• Provide academic advising to students across all stages of UGIS majors and minors, including declaration and degree progress.
• Help students define realistic academic goals and develop pathways within interdisciplinary programs.
• Maintain and update student records in APR and program databases; certify degree requirements.
• Coordinate with student services staff and stay informed about course offerings.
• Identify students with GPA or progression issues and refer appropriately.
• Meet with faculty, UGIS Manager, and other advisors on policies and procedures.
• Advise students on study abroad, internships, research, scholarships, and graduate school preparation.
• Publicize program updates and prepare statistical reports; maintain archival records.
• Coordinate course enrollment, waitlists, and transfer credits; monitor timelines.
• Collaborate with UGIS advisors and contribute to program event planning and logistics.
