Job summary

The University of California, Merced seeks an Academic Advisor to support students in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts. You will work with faculty to design advising programs for Economics and Management and Business Economics majors/minors and help students navigate undergraduate policies.

Tasks include advising on GPA issues, probation options, transfer coursework, and coordinating with campus committees.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic advising for prospective and current students in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive advising programs for Economics and Management and Business Economics majors/minors.
  • Explain policies and procedures related to undergraduate programs and advise on policy changes.
  • Create a welcoming atmosphere for students and direct them to appropriate resources.
  • Identify students with GPA or progress issues and advise on probation or dismissal options.
  • Refer students to counseling and non‑academic units when needed.
  • Determine transferability of non‑UC courses and integrate transfer work into programs.
  • Represent the School on campus committees and participate in academic initiatives.
  • Develop academic success programs and workshop series throughout the semester.
  • Advise instructors on student advising issues, course scheduling, and policy compliance.
  • Confirm degree completion requirements for interdisciplinary programs and transfers.
  • Respond to advising inquiries and unforeseen questions.

Job description

Hiring Range & Compensation

Salary range: $24.56/hr - $30.69/hr.

Job Closing Date

This posting will remain open until filled; initial applicant review expected on or around March 30, 2026.

Work Schedule

Onsite 5 days per week. After 3 months: 4 days on campus and 1 day remote. After probation: 3 days campus and 2 days remote.

Union Representation

This position is covered by UAW‑SSAP (SV).

Key Responsibilities

Provide academic advising for prospective and current students in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts.

Work with faculty to develop and implement comprehensive advising programs for Economics and Management and Business Economics majors/minors.

Interpret and explain University and School policies and procedures relevant to undergraduate programs. Advise faculty and management on student issues and recommend policy changes.

Create a welcoming atmosphere for students, directing them to appropriate University resources and specialized help when needed.

Identify students with GPA or progress problems, advise on academic probation or dismissal options, and recommend appropriate courses of action.

Assess barriers to student success and make referrals to counseling and other non‑academic units.

Determine transferability of non‑UC courses and assist students in integrating transfer work into program requirements.

Represent the School on campus committees such as the Academic Dismissal Committee and the Mid‑Semester Grade Intervention Committee.

Develop academic success programs and workshop series throughout the semester.

Advise instructors on student advising issues, course scheduling, and compliance with policies.

Confirm students meet requirements for degree completion, including interdisciplinary programs and transfer work.

Respond to additional advising support questions and unforeseen inquiries.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
  • Advanced degree from an accredited university (preferred).
  • One year of directly related, progressively responsible experience in student services, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. A master’s degree is preferred but does not substitute for required experience.
