Job Summary and Qualifications

The Intake Assessment Evaluator works with the Program Director and Intake Assessment Coordinator to manage the pre‑admission assessment process, provide clinical assessments for potential patients, and participate in community education and events such as health fairs.

The role includes handling all calls for information and referrals, ensuring callers receive appropriate level of service, and maintaining EMTALA compliance.

Responsibilities
  • The intake assessment evaluator responds to all psychiatry service calls, prioritizes patients based on need, and ensures EMTALA compliance.
  • Coordinates communication for all assessment and admission activities, facilitating rapid throughput in the emergency department and requesting additional resources when necessary.
  • Responds to calls for assessments in the emergency department within 15 minutes and initiates the requested assessment no later than 60 minutes from the initial request.
  • Works with inpatient nursing staff to secure appropriate bed availability for incoming patients.
  • Documents all incoming calls in the approved format, regardless of outcome.
  • Provides education and support related to emergency detention procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborates with the behavioral health sales team to provide data, ensure accurate referral data management, and include sales team members in team meetings.
  • Completes assessments in an average of 90 minutes or less, including chart review, interview, and documentation.
  • Demonstrates ability to set priorities and exercise good judgment in situations not covered by verbal or written instructions.
  • Follows established policy and procedures while promoting a positive and cooperative work environment.
  • Channels concerns appropriately and provides input, suggestions, and support as needed.
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of work practices and ensures patient rights and confidentiality.
  • Assesses and reassesses patient needs, providing on‑site and off‑site clinical assessments.
  • Collaborates with hospital departments and the multidisciplinary team to assist with behavioral health assessment needs.
  • Provides ongoing education to patients and families, and supplies resources and support before, during, and after treatment.
  • Coordinates with physicians through the referral, admission, treatment, and discharge process.
  • Trains other behavioral health team members on managing inquiry calls and tracking key indicators.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Patient/Family Education
  • Provides patient/family education as per department and hospital policy and procedure.
  • Assesses learning needs, abilities, and readiness, identifies barriers such as language or culture, and integrates this information into the intake assessment.
  • Collaborates with other disciplines to document and incorporate education needs into the intake assessment.
  • Documents education provided and supplies appropriate educational materials.
  • Collaborates with other health care providers to educate patients and families on behavioral health services.
Qualifications
