About the Role

The Insurance AR Manager provides strategic and operational leadership for a large-scale Insurance Accounts Receivable function responsible for protecting and optimizing organizational revenue through denial prevention, claim resolution, reimbursement recovery, financial reconciliation, and operational excellence.

This role leads a multi-level team of Insurance AR Specialists, Leads, and an Assistant Manager, driving accountability, performance, and continuous improvement across the revenue cycle. The Manager establishes clear operational standards, develops frontline leaders, and ensures payer-related receivables are managed effectively while balancing productivity, quality, compliance, and financial outcomes.

As a key revenue cycle leader, the Manager leverages AR, denial, reimbursement, quality, and productivity data to identify trends, mitigate risks, allocate resources, and improve organizational performance. Partnering closely with Revenue Cycle leadership and cross-functional stakeholders, they influence operational strategy, strengthen payer performance, improve cash flow, reduce denials, and enhance the provider experience.

The Manager is responsible for building and scaling a high-performing Insurance AR operation through workforce planning, leadership development, process optimization, automation, reporting, and operational controls. Success in this role is measured through revenue recovery, denial reduction, operational efficiency, team effectiveness, compliance, and the organization's ability to sustain a scalable and financially healthy reimbursement operation.

  • Lead the Insurance AR function, driving performance across aging, denials, cash recovery, productivity, quality, compliance, and operational effectiveness.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators, leveraging AR, denial, payer, workforce, and financial data to identify risks, allocate resources, and inform strategic decisions.
  • Oversee resolution of complex reimbursement issues, including escalated denials, payer disputes, underpayments, recoupments, reimbursement variances, and high-risk aging accounts.
  • Ensure effective execution of claim follow-up, appeals, reconsiderations, corrected claims, payer communications, supporting documentation, and filing deadline requirements.
  • Drive operational excellence through workflow optimization, automation, technology utilization, reporting enhancements, and scalable process improvements.
  • Identify and address root causes of denials, payment delays, payer challenges, and process breakdowns, implementing solutions that improve financial and operational outcomes.
  • Lead workforce planning, capacity management, and escalation strategies that support organizational growth, operational efficiency, and accountability.
  • Maintain expertise in payer reimbursement methodologies, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices to ensure effective and compliant AR operations.
  • Hire, develop, and lead Insurance AR team members, including frontline leaders, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and high performance.
  • Prepare and present operational, financial, and performance reporting to Revenue Cycle and senior leadership, providing insight into trends, risks, opportunities, and strategic recommendations.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or a related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Five or more years of progressive healthcare revenue cycle, insurance billing, reimbursement, collections, or accounts receivable experience, including complex AR and denial management.
  • Three or more years of leadership experience managing healthcare revenue cycle teams; experience leading remote or hybrid teams preferred.
  • Demonstrated success building and scaling operations through workforce planning, performance management, workflow standardization, cross-training, process improvement, and change management.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare reimbursement and revenue cycle operations, including commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, and managed care claims; claim adjudication; denials and appeals; timely filing; authorizations; eligibility; coordination of benefits; payment posting; reconciliations; recoupments; and underpayment analysis.
  • Advanced proficiency with EHR/practice management systems, payer portals, clearinghouse tools, Microsoft Excel, and operational reporting; AdvancedMD experience preferred.
  • Proven ability to analyze operational and financial data to assess performance, identify root causes, evaluate risk, forecast capacity, and drive improvement initiatives.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team-development skills with a demonstrated ability to build accountability, engagement, and high performance.
  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex financial and payer-related information for diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, and sound judgment.
