Job description

Job Summary

The faculty of the Department of History at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for two full‑time, professional‑track Instructor positions to begin August 16, 2026. Each position is a 9‑month appointment with a teaching load of eight courses for the academic year. These are three‑year appointments contingent upon Dean’s approval, satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding. The Department of History is home to more than 30 faculty and 40 graduate students, teaching and conducting research in U.S. South, civil rights, race and slavery, the environment, science and technology, popular culture, and public history.

Required Education and Experience
  • Ph.D. in History (or a related field) with demonstrable experience teaching and researching the history of the founding documents of the United States government, namely the U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Federalist Papers, the Emancipation Proclamation, and documents of the African American Freedom Struggle.
  • Interest in shaping civics education for the 21st century.
