Job summary

Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) seeks an English adjunct instructor to support student success by teaching courses designed for transfer and for career technical programs. In this role, you’ll develop learner-centered lesson plans, use diverse instructional materials, and help students build employability skills across GTCC campuses.

A Master’s degree in English or a related field is required, with a Doctoral degree preferred.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary teaching experience in English.
  • Experience teaching at a community college is preferred.
  • Knowledge of assessment of student learning outcomes and distance learning is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses designed for transfer and support of career technical programs.
  • Develop learner-centered lesson plans and use diverse instructional materials.
  • Participate in professional development activities to maintain currency in the field.
  • Maintain classroom and laboratory spaces and assist with student records like grades and attendance.

Teaching faculty at Guilford Technical Community College areresponsible for supporting student success by creating an optimumlearning environment, responding to student needs, managingeffective instructional activities, modeling employability skills,demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative workrelationships with other faculty and staff, supporting collegeadministrative requirements, and maintaining competency in theirinstructional field. He/she will be responsible for qualityinstruction and for effective participation and interest in thetotal affairs of the college.

Under general supervision, this individual will prepare and teachcourses designed for transfer and support of career technicalprograms. These courses may include DRE - Integrated Reading &Writing and ENG 111- Writing & Inquiry.

Duties/Functions
Teaching
  • developing learner centered lesson plans
  • employing teaching strategies & instructional materials fordifferent learning styles
  • incorporating, as pedagogically appropriate, current technologyin classroom, distance learning and laboratory environments
  • creating and modeling a quality learning environment thatsupports a diverse student population
  • preparing, distributing and utilizing instructional supportmaterials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials,instructional media and other devices as appropriate
  • conducting appropriate assessment of student learning outcomesin courses and programs/general education as appropriate
Professional Development
  • participating in professional development activities tomaintain currency in field; maintaining current credentials orlicensures as required by program or accreditation
  • participating in professional development opportunities toadvance teaching skills and strategies
Administration
  • maintaining classroom and laboratory spaces including upkeep ofassigned equipment
  • providing for the security of facilities, equipment andinstructional materials and maintaining safe workingconditions
  • maintaining student records (e.g., grades and attendance) inaccordance with established deadlines using a variety oftechnology-based programs (e.g., Colleague, WebAdvisor,Moodle)
  • complying with all applicable college, state and federal rulesand regulations
Student Support
  • conducting recruiting activities
  • promoting retention/persistence by assisting students todevelop strategies for success
  • referring students to campus and community resources whenappropriate

Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills:adaptability, communication, information processing, problemsolving, responsibility and teamwork.

Additional Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintain student records.
  • Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor.
Education Required
  • Master’s degree in English or a related field from aninstitutionally accredited university with a minimum of 18 graduatesemester hour credits in English.
Education Preferred
  • Doctoral degree in English or a related field from aninstitutionally accredited university with a minimum of 18 graduatesemester hour credits in English.
Experience Required
  • Post-secondary teaching experience in English
Experience Preferred
  • Community college teaching experience
  • Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes
  • Experience with distance learning and/or alternateinstructional delivery systems
KSA Required
