Job summary

Flathead Valley Community College (FVCC) is seeking a CDL Instructor for the Lincoln County Campus Trades Institute in Libby, MT. The role will involve delivering instruction in Class A CDL and related endorsements, with opportunities for day, evening, or weekend courses as needed.

The instructor will develop materials for additional endorsements, maintain records, and coordinate with campus leadership to ensure high-quality training and up-to-date instruction in line with industry standards.

Qualifications

  • Three years’ experience in the occupation to be taught or equivalent postsecondary education plus work experience
  • Current Montana Class A Commercial Driver’s License with insurable license
  • Class A CDL with Bus/Passenger Endorsement or ability to obtain within 30–90 days

SUMMARY

The CDL Instructor provides instruction to students in the Commercial Driver’s License program, and may include, but are not limited to Class “A,” and Bus/Passenger endorsements. Courses will include alternative delivery methods, day, evening, or weekend times.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Provides career-oriented instruction and support to students to assist them in the development and/or improvement of a class “A” commercial driving license, Class B school bus and passenger endorsement
  • Provides training materials for additional endorsements for HazMat, doubles, triples, and tanker.
  • Maintains and submits instructional records in accordance with requirements
  • Maintains daily driving log.
  • Responsible for daily checks and preventative maintenance of truck and equipment. Identifies and coordinates all service and repairs; obtains pre-approval from LCC Director and FVCC CDL Program Director for expenses.
  • Attends all LCC campus staff meetings and related Trades Institute meetings (virtually) and participates in student and/or program assessment as directed.
  • Works with staff and supervisor on instructional content, and effective uses of multimedia in the development of on-line and blended trades/technology, or on-campus courses; integrates subject area with other related curricula, such as CDL simulator
  • Checks in daily with the Program Director, LCC, for coordination of campus services, and weekly with the Program Director of Heavy Equipment and CDL, Kalispell for curriculum and instruction fidelity.
  • Maintains professional ethics and confidentiality of students in accordance with applicable laws and policies
  • Works professionally and collaboratively with college faculty and staff to aid program visibility, student recruitment, and student proficiency in meeting learning outcomes.
  • Remains current in practices, trends and research related to areas of assignment; maintains current knowledge of industry technology, best practices, and instructional practices.
  • Serves as an ambassador for the College. Creates and maintains a collaborative and collegial environment and maintains effective working relationships
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in relevant areas to help build strategic initiatives.
  • Attends related training, workshops, and professional development
  • Cross trains to perform other departmental and team functions; backfills for staff as needed.
  • Actively participates in the development of a climate that promotes and supports innovation and efforts to continuously improve services to students, faculty, and the College
  • Advances the mission of FVCC by serving on or convening committees and contributing in the community in college-related activities
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Reports to the Program Director, LCC.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Three years’ experience in the occupation to be taught; OR, an equivalent number of years of postsecondary education in the career/technical discipline, combined with work experience in the career/technical discipline; AND,
  • Current Montana Class A Commercial Driver’s License with insurable license; AND,
  • Class A CDL with Bus/Passenger Endorsement or the ability to obtain the Bus/Passenger Endorsement within the first 30 – 90 days of hire date.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Academic (AAS or certification) or professional credentials in commercial driving
  • Ten years’ verifiable experience driving multiple truck-trailer combinations.
  • Experience teaching in higher education or at a secondary level

  • Ability and willingness to serve as an ambassador for the College by interacting appropriately with the college community and community

  • Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to intermittently work non-traditional schedules including evenings, weekends, etc.
  • Ability to maintain regular and acceptable attendance levels
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  • Ability to pass a driver’s license records check and maintain current Montana Driver’s License and a clean driving record
  • Ability to successfully pass a DOT Controlled Substances Test
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check
  • Ability to respond in the event of an emergency
  • Ability to perform a Medium Duty job, according to the Selected Characteristics of Occupations Defined in the Revised Dictionary of Occupational Titles, U.S. Department of Labor and Industry. Medium Duty involves exertion of 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10-25 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds continuously to move objects.
