Job summary

Flathead Valley Community College seeks a CDL Instructor to teach the Commercial Driver’s License program, including Class A, and Bus/Passenger endorsements. Courses may run day, evening, or weekend, with blended delivery methods and accompanying instructional materials.

The role requires a Montana Class A CDL with appropriate endorsements, plus potential to obtain endorsements within the first 30–90 days. The instructor will maintain records, support student outcomes, and contribute to program

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction to CDL students for Class A, and Bus/Passenger endorsements.
  • Develop instructional materials and use multimedia for online/blended courses.
  • Maintain instructional records and daily driving log entries.
  • Coordinate with Program Director for curriculum fidelity and safety checks.
  • Represent FVCC professionally, aiding student recruitment and program visibility.

Courses will include alternative delivery methods, day, evening, or weekend times.ESSENTIAL DUTIESProvides career-oriented instruction and support to students to assist them in the development and/or improvement of a class “A” commercial driving license, Class B school bus and passenger endorsementProvides training materials for additional endorsements for HazMat, doubles, triples, and tanker.Maintains and submits instructional records in accordance with requirementsMaintains daily driving log.Responsible for daily checks and preventative maintenance of truck and equipment. Identifies and coordinates all service and repairs; obtains pre-approval from LCC Director and FVCC CDL Program Director for expenses.Attends all LCC campus staff meetings and related Trades Institute meetings (virtually) and participates in student and/or program assessment as directed.Works with staff and supervisor on instructional content, and effective uses of multimedia in the development of on-line and blended trades/technology, or on-campus courses; integrates subject area with other related curricula, such as CDL simulatorChecks in daily with the Program Director, LCC, for coordination of campus services, and weekly with the Program Director of Heavy Equipment and CDL, Kalispell for curriculum and instruction fidelity.Maintains professional ethics and confidentiality of students in accordance with applicable laws and policiesWorks professionally and collaboratively with college faculty and staff to aid program visibility, student recruitment, and student proficiency in meeting learning outcomes.Remains current in practices, trends and research related to areas of assignment; maintains current knowledge of industry technology, best practices, and instructional practices.Serves as an ambassador for the College. Creates and maintains a collaborative and collegial environment and maintains effective working relationshipsKeep abreast of the latest developments in relevant areas to help build strategic initiatives.Attends related training, workshops, and professional developmentCross trains to perform other departmental and team functions; backfills for staff as needed.Actively participates in the development of a climate that promotes and supports innovation and efforts to continuously improve services to students, faculty, and the CollegeAdvances the mission of FVCC by serving on or convening committees and contributing in the community in college-related activitiesPerforms other duties as assigned.Reports to the Program Director, LCC.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSThe Montana Board of Regents of Higher Education Policy 730 requires the following minimum qualifications for faculty in career and technical disciplines:Three years’ experience in the occupation to be taught; OR, an equivalent number of years of postsecondary education in the career/technical discipline, combined with work experience in the career/technical discipline; AND,Current Montana Class A Commercial Driver’s License with insurable license; AND,Class A CDL with Bus/Passenger Endorsement or the ability to obtain the Bus/Passenger Endorsement within the first 30 – 90 days of hire date.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSAcademic (AAS or certification) or professional credentials in commercial drivingTen years’ verifiable experience driving multiple truck-trailer combinations.Experience teaching in higher education or at a secondary levelKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESAbility to effectively teach content materialAbility to work within policies and procedures of FVCCAbility and willingness to serve as an ambassador for the College by interacting appropriately with the college community and communityAbility to maintain effective and positive professional relationshipsAbility to follow and issue directionsDemonstrated communication, technology, presentation, customer service and interpersonal skillsAbility to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgroundsAbility to intermittently work non-traditional schedules including evenings, weekends, etc.Ability to maintain regular and acceptable attendance levelsAbility to maintain a high degree of confidentialityAbility to pass a driver’s license records check and maintain current Montana Driver’s License and a clean driving recordAbility to successfully pass a DOT Controlled Substances TestAbility to successfully pass a criminal background checkAbility to respond in the event of an emergencyAbility to perform a Medium Duty job, according to the Selected Characteristics of Occupations Defined in the Revised Dictionary of Occupational Titles, U.S. Department of Labor and Industry.
