Teaching faculty at Guilford Technical Community College are responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimumlearning environment, responding to student needs, managingeffective instructional activities, modeling employability skills,demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative workrelationships with other faculty and staff, supporting collegeadministrative requirements, and maintaining competency in theirinstructional field. He/she will be responsible for qualityinstruction and for effective participation and interest in thetotal affairs of the college.
Under general supervision, this individual will prepare and teachcarpentry/construction training courses designed for continuingeducation for the workforce industry. The faculty member must be able to instruct a wide variety of building processes in alaboratory environment and may be required to teach day, eveningand/or weekend hours. Flexibility to teach on any of GTCC’smultiple campuses (Greensboro, High Point or Cameron Campus).
Duties/Functions
Teaching
Prepare & teach departmental courses to include:
- developing learner centered lesson plans
- employing teaching strategies & instructional materials fordifferent learning styles
- incorporating, as pedagogically appropriate, current technologyin classroom, distance learning and laboratory environments
- creating and modeling a quality learning environment thatsupports a diverse student population
- preparing, distributing and utilizing instructional supportmaterials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials,instructional media and other devices as appropriate
- updating and revising curriculum to maintain currency
- developing new courses as needed to support the instructionalmission
- participating in the development and review of course andprogram/general education outcomes as appropriate
- developing, conducting and documenting appropriate assessmentof student learning in outcomes courses and programs/generaleducation as appropriate
Professional Development
Maintain a professional status that supports the instructionalmission by:
- participating in professional development activities tomaintain currency in field; maintaining current credentials orlicensures as required by program or accreditation
- participating in professional development opportunities toadvance teaching skills and strategies
Administration
Provide daily & ongoing oversight of facilities, equipment andstudent records to include:
- maintaining classroom and laboratory spaces including upkeep ofassigned equipment
- providing for the security of facilities, equipment andinstructional materials and maintaining safe workingconditions
- maintaining student records (e.g., grades and attendance) inaccordance with established deadlines using a variety oftechnology-based programs (e.g., Colleague, Self-Service,Canvas)
- complying with all applicable college, state and federal rulesand regulations
Student Support
Provide an environment conducive to student success to include:
- conducting recruiting activities
- providing academic advising
- promoting retention/persistence by assisting students todevelop strategies for success
- assisting students with the registration and graduationprocess
- referring students to campus and community resources whenappropriate
- maintain student records
College Service
Support college-wide endeavors to include:
- collaboration with faculty and staff from otherdivisions/departments to promote communication, coordinateschedules and support student success
- serving on department, division and college committees
- participating in GTCC institutional initiatives
- collaborating with educational partners, business/industryand/or external agencies as appropriate to promote theinstructional mission of GTCC
- supporting collegiality and teaching excellence by activelyparticipating in the professional development of new and veteranfaculty (e.g., mentoring and peer observation)
- participating in extracurricular student activities/clubs
- attending college professional development sessions,college/division/department meetings, graduation and convocation,as required
- demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills:adaptability, communication, information processing, problemsolving, responsibility and teamwork.
- perform all duties as assigned by supervisor

Education Required
- Diploma in Carpentry, Construction, or related field from aninstitutionally accredited college or university or the equivalent(e.g. journeyman apprentice).
- National Center for Construction & Education Research (NCCER ), Instructor Certification Training Program ( ICTP )completion and Test Proctor Certification or the ability to attaincertification prior to class start date.
Education Preferred
- Associate’s degree in construction management or a relatedfield from an institutionally accredited college oruniversity.
Experience Required
- 3 years of relevant industry experience in the constructionindustry
- 2 years teaching and/or industry training experience inconstruction/carpentry topics in any of the following formats:teaching courses, training sessions, conducting professionaldevelopment workshops, and/or other continuing educationseminars
Experience Preferred
- More than 3 years of relevant industry experience in theconstruction industry as a carpenter
- Postsecondary teaching experience
- Experience with commercial construction processes
- Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes
- Experience with distance learning and/or alternateinstructional delivery systems
KSA Required
The Instructor shall possess an understanding of and commitment tothe nature and role of the Community College, particularly its“open door” policy. He/she shall have demonstrated personal andprofessional competence for the responsibilities assigned. TheInstructor must be able to:

KSA Preferred
Department/Job Specific Requirements
- Instructor must complete the National Center for ConstructionEducation and Research ( NCCER ) Instructor Certification TrainingProgram ( ICTP ) and Test Proctor Certification, in order to be anapproved NCCER Instructor and exam Proctor.
The following (compliance) training is required and must becompleted within the first 30 days of hire with annual refreshertraining thereafter: (additional training may be added asneeded)
