Job summary

George Mason University’s College of Science invites applications for an Instructor in Biomedical Sciences. The 9-month instructional faculty position supports teaching and student success in graduate biomedical concepts, with duties in advising and program operations.

Qualifications

  • Assists with student-oriented event planning and management.
  • Provides logistic and other support for invited speakers, recruiters, and visitors.
  • Serves as Supplemental Faculty for BMED-George Squared; may carry a teaching load.
  • Provides classroom and online technical, administrative, and teaching support for instructors.

Biomedical Sciences (BMED) in the College of Science offers agraduate certificate program that helps students prepare for, gainadmission to, and succeed in health professional schools includingmedicine, dentistry, PA, and other tracks.

About the Position:

The Instructor position supports instructional faculty indelivering classes and assisting students in improving study skillsand learning graduate biomedical concepts needed for success in thehealth professions. Additionally, the position assists the programin advising and logistic activities needed for programoperations.

Responsibilities:
Instruction/Student Support
  • Offers in-person and online follow up and review sessions forstudents;
  • Develops and delivers online instructional sessions for inperson and fully online students in the program;
  • Holds office hours for individual and small group help sessionsfor students;
  • Advises students on progress in the program, appropriate studymethods, applying to health professional school, career goals, andrelated matters;
  • Assists with student-oriented event planning andmanagement;
  • Provides logistic and other support for invited speakers,recruiters, and other visitors;
  • Serves as Supplemental Faculty for BMED-George Squared;and
  • May carry a teaching load.
Instructional Support
  • Provides classroom and online technical, administrative, andteaching support for instructors;
  • Prepares various course materials for Instructors as requested;and
  • Helps prepare, edit, administer, and grade examinations andassignments.
Program Administration Support
  • Provides logistic support for room reservations, IT equipmentand management, and communications to students;
  • Student academic record management and tracking;
  • Participates in recruiting events both locally and nationally;and
  • Performs other program related activities as assigned by theDirector.
Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in related field;
  • At least one year in a graduate biomedical educationprogram;
  • Several years of experience in a clinical setting;
  • Demonstrated leadership and teamwork activity, and successfulperformance on standardized tests;
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of advanced biomedicalscience, the skills to assist students who have encounteredacademic difficulty as undergraduates, and the ability to helpthese students improve their understanding of biomedicine and theirstudy skills overall; and
  • An awareness of specific reasons for student academic strugglesand an appreciation of a diversity of backgrounds, learning styles,and approaches to improved academics are other attributes requiredin this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Relevant academic performance in a graduate biomedicaleducational environment;
  • Experience teaching and/or tutoring at the high school level orabove;
  • Experience working in healthcare or other team settings;and
  • Familiarity with the practice of medicine or dentistry, andperspectives on different learning modalities such as onlineeducation, hybrid formats, and flipped curricula.
