Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for multiple Instructional Support Specialist positions in the Department of Chemistry. The Teaching Assistant will supervise undergraduates in a laboratory course and undertake instructional and administrative duties in support of a lecture course.

Positions may be full-time or part-time and are offered each semester on a semester-by-semester basis, with appointments starting as early as 08/16/2023 and continuing based on department needs.

Qualifications

  • Ability to enforce safety guidelines in the laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and grade homework, quizzes, exams, papers or lab assignments.
  • Lead review sessions, hold regular office hours, and tutor students.
  • Assist instructor with grade reporting, course website, and proctoring exams.
  • Assist with demonstrations, prepare lab materials, and ensure lab safety.
  • Prepare pre-lab lectures and take class notes.
  • Perform other related tasks in support of undergraduate/graduate education.

General Notes

**Multiple positions** Date available: 08/16/2023. Position duration: Appointed on a semester-by-semester basis. Position open to all applicants. Full time and part time positions are available each semester based on department need.

Purpose

The purpose of this position is to act as a Teaching Assistant (TA) in the Department of Chemistry by supervising undergraduates in a laboratory course or undertaking instructional and administrative duties in support of a lecture course.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation and grading of homework assignments, quizzes, exams, papers, or laboratory assignments.
  • Lead review sessions or discussion sessions, hold regularly assigned walk-in office hours, and tutor students on the assigned subject matter.
  • Administrative assistance to instructor to include grade reporting, maintenance of course web site, and proctoring scheduled and make-up exams.
  • Assist with classroom demonstrations, prepare laboratory materials, perform laboratory clean-up, and implement and demonstrate safe practices in the lab, as necessary.
  • Assist with preparation of pre-lab lectures and take notes in class, as necessary.
  • Other related tasks in support of undergraduate and/or graduate education.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry. Excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent attention to detail. Ability to enforce safety guidelines in the laboratory.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience related to functions described above. Demonstrated leadership/teaching skills, initiative and professionalism.

Salary Range

$44,444 + depending on education qualifications

Working Conditions

Exposure to chemical fumes. Exposure to chemicals. Use of manual dexterity. Security Sensitive; criminal background check conducted. Selected applicants must complete student information privacy training (FERPA training).

Work Shift

Schedule may vary depending on course assignment and department need.
