Job summary

UC Santa Cruz is seeking an Administrative/Technical Support role for the Undergraduate Teaching Labs in the Chemistry & Biochemistry department. This person will help manage day-to-day lab operations at the Natural Sciences II facility and assist in Thimann Labs when needed.

The role involves preparing materials, standardizing reagents, maintaining equipment and inventories, and ensuring safe lab practices in a dynamic teaching environment on the UCSC Main Campus.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience/training.
• Knowledge of chemistry and physics principles at bachelor level.
• Familiarity with Environment Health and Safety policies for lab safety, safe reagent handling and storage, and waste handling procedures.
• Theoretical and practical knowledge of modern laboratory instrumentation and ability to use, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instruments.
• Laboratory skills for accurate weighing, mixing, and pH adjustment.
• Strong communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Strong customer-service skills.
• Ability to work with solvents and chemicals in all facilities as required by course syllabi.
• Ability to maintain organized records.
• Proficiency with email, word processing, and spreadsheets.
• Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Prepare materials and set up equipment and supplies for laboratory experiments.
• Prepare and standardize reagents and solutions.
• Interact with faculty and TAs to troubleshoot experiment problems.
• Set-up, test, calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments.
• Maintain supplies and general reagent inventories.
• Communicate safe use of hazardous materials to students and ensure lab cleanliness.
• Maintain order and cleanliness in teaching labs and prepare solutions as needed.
• Notify instructors of hazards and safety precautions.
• Monitor and decontaminate equipment and laboratories.
• Clean or direct student employees to clean lab benches and glassware.
