Job Description

Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, is seeking a full-time Geology faculty member in the Natural Sciences and Engineering (NSE) area to fill a position beginning January 2027. The faculty member in this position will teach introductory geology lecture and laboratory courses, supporting both students seeking general education credit and those interested in transferring to four-year geoscience programs. Course-based and extracurricular field experiences can draw on the region's Piedmont, Appalachian, and Coastal Plain geology. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated educator who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner. This position is part of a collective bargaining unit.

The successful candidate will appreciate teaching in a multi-cultural environment and will welcome the opportunity to work with students with diverse learning abilities. Faculty duties include classroom, laboratory, and field instruction, assessment, curriculum development, advising, professional inquiry, committee work, and instructional technology.

Teaching assignments may include various delivery modes, such as face-to-face, online, hybrid, and blended formats during days, evenings, and weekends. Montgomery College has multiple campuses, and faculty may be assigned to teach in-person at any of these campuses and to teach online.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Teaching and Curriculum
  • Teaches geology lecture and laboratory courses with a minimum of 30 semester hours per academic year. May teach courses in related disciplines, such as physical sciences, based on department need and the candidate's qualifications.
  • Teaches a varied schedule that may include day, evening, early morning, weekend, and accelerated sections. Opportunities may exist for teaching summer classes.
  • Designs, implements, manages, and assesses courses taught in a variety of modes.
  • Accommodates students with varying backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Contributes to curriculum development and revision, including course design, and the review and selection of instructional materials.
  • Delivers assigned courses in accordance with College catalog descriptions, common course syllabi, and the teaching standards of the College and the NSE area.
  • Participates in General Education assessment, course recertification, and program review.
  • Holds regular office hours and maintains availability to students.
Laboratory and Field Instruction
  • Plans and leads course-based and extracurricular field experiences for geology students, including site selection, logistics, and student safety.
  • Designs and prepares laboratory activities, collaborating with lab staff on necessary geology teaching collections, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Implements and enforces laboratory and field safety protocols in accordance with College policy.
Student Support and Advising
  • Advises, tutors, and mentors students.
  • Serves as an effective advocate for students, particularly those transferring to four-year institutions, and advises students about transfer opportunities.
  • Arranges and promotes scholarship, research, and internship opportunities for students.
  • Advises and supports student clubs and related student activities.
Service and Professional Development
  • Participates in college and community activities that contribute to the growth and development of students, the College, and the community.
  • Serves on and leads department, discipline, campus, and college committees.
  • Stays current in the discipline and pursues continuous professional development, including participation in professional organizations and activities.
Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Geology or a closely related geoscience field.
  • Demonstrated college-level teaching experience, which may include experience as a graduate teaching assistant or instructor of record.
  • Experience designing and/or setting up hands–on laboratory activities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A PhD in Geology or a closely related geoscience field.
  • Two or more years of recent college teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching at a community college, another open–enrollment setting, or otherwise working with students of widely varying academic preparation.
  • Experience teaching introductory geology lecture and laboratory courses.
  • Experience planning and leading geology field trips or other field-based instruction.
  • Graduate coursework qualifying the candidate to teach additional courses in physical or earth sciences.
  • Experience teaching Early College or dual enrollment students.
  • Experience with earth sciences software used in instructional laboratories, e.g., Google Earth, Sferic Maps, Stellarium.
