Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job Description

Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, is seeking a full-time Biology faculty member in the Natural Sciences and Engineering (NSE) area to fill a position starting January 2027. This position will primarily teach Microbiology, with additional teaching responsibilities in Introductory Biology (both majors and non-majors) and Genetics. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated educator who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner. This position is part of a collective bargaining unit.

Montgomery College has a long history of successfully preparing students for transfer to four-year institutions such as the University of Maryland, Georgetown University, George Washington University, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Additionally, all of Montgomery College's science buildings were constructed within the last 15 years and feature state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.

The successful candidate will appreciate teaching in a multi-cultural environment and will welcome the opportunity to work with students with diverse learning abilities. Faculty duties include classroom and laboratory instruction, assessment, curriculum development, advising, professional inquiry, committee work, and instructional technology. The opportunity to engage in research with students is also supported and encouraged.

Teaching assignments may include various delivery modes, such as face-to-face, online, remote, hybrid and/or blended formats during days, evenings, and weekends. Montgomery College has four campuses and instructs courses at area high schools, as part of the growing dual enrollment program. Faculty may be assigned to any of these campuses and/or teaching different modalities.

Duties include but are not limited to:
Teaching and Curriculum
  • Teaches non-majors and majors-level biology courses with a minimum of 30 semester hours per academic year. This teaching position is expected to include Microbiology (BIOL 210), Introductory Biology (BIOL 101 and/or BIOL 150), Principles of Genetics (BIOL 222), and other courses in the discipline as needed.
  • Teaches a varied schedule that may include day, evening, early morning, weekend, and accelerated sections. Opportunities may exist for teaching summer classes.
  • Designs, implements, manages, and assesses courses taught in a variety of modes, incorporating the use of a learning management system (Blackboard) and other relevant technology into instruction.
  • Engages students in learning through active, collaborative learning approaches, and accommodates students with varying backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Contributes to curriculum development and revision, including course design, and the review and selection of instructional materials.
  • Delivers assigned courses in accordance with College catalog descriptions and the teaching standards of the College and the NSE area.
  • Participates in General Education assessment, course recertification, and program review with the goal of increasing student success.
Laboratory Instruction

Designs and prepares laboratory activities for microbiology and introductory biology courses, collaborating with lab staff on necessary equipment, supplies, and instructional materials.

Implements and enforces laboratory safety protocols, including safe handling of microbial cultures and other biological materials, in accordance with College policy.

Student Support and Advising
  • Holds regular office hours and maintains availability to students. Mentors and tutors students outside of class to assist them with being successful in college.
  • Advises students about program curricula, transfer options to four-year institutions, and professional/career opportunities.
  • Arranges and promotes scholarship, research, and internship opportunities for students.
  • Advises and supports student clubs and related student activities.
Service and Professional Development
  • Participates in college and community activities that contribute to the growth and development of students, the College, and the community.
  • Serves on and leads department, discipline, campus, and college committees.
  • Stays current in the discipline and pursues continuous professional development, including participation in professional organizations and activities.
Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or Genetics another closely related field.
  • One year of demonstrated college-level teaching experience, which may include experience as a graduate teaching assistant or instructor of record.
  • Experience designing and/or setting up hands-on laboratory activities with attention to safety protocols.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
