Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or Associate degree in Surgical Technology from an accredited institution.
  • Must hold NBSTSA credential (CST or CST/First Assistant) from an NCCA-accredited body.
  • At least 3 years of current OR scrub experience or 3 years as an instructor in surgical technology within the last 5 years.
  • Proven instructional methodology, curriculum design, and program planning skills.
  • Proven excellence in classroom instruction with diverse teaching methods.
  • Commitment to inclusive, equitable teaching and ability to work with diverse students; LMS experience.
  • Eligible to work in the United States without visa sponsorship; willing to travel within DC, MD, VA.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a variety of didactic, laboratory, and clinical Surgical Technology courses.
  • Teach 30 semester hours per academic year; opportunities to teach summer classes.
  • Participate in ARC/STSA accreditation activities and abide by standards.
  • Participate in curriculum design, program evaluation, and outcomes assessment.
  • Provide support to the program and clinical coordinator.
  • Serve on departmental committees, hold office hours, advise students, and pursue professional development.

Job description

Job Description Montgomery College is seeking an outstanding full-time Surgical Technology faculty member to fill a position beginning January 2027. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner.

The Surgical Technology program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA). This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. The successful candidate will appreciate teaching in a multi-cultural environment and will welcome the opportunity to work with students with diverse learning abilities.

Faculty duties include classroom instruction, assessment, curriculum development, advising, professional inquiry, committee work and utilizing instructional technology.

The majority of our courses use open educational resources (OERs) to yield cost savings for the students and the most current content for faculty. Incoming faculty will utilize OERs in alignment with the other faculty in the discipline.

Teaching assignments may include various delivery modes, such as face-to-face, online, hybrid, and/or blended formats during days, evenings, and weekends. Montgomery College has multiple campuses, and faculty may be assigned to teach in-person at any of these campuses and teach online.

Duties include but are not limited to
  • Teach a variety of didactic, laboratory, and clinical courses within the Surgical Technology program.
  • Teach 30 semester hours per academic year.
  • Opportunities may exist to teach summer classes.
  • Participate in ARC/STSA accreditation activities and abide by accreditation guidelines and standards.
  • Participate in discipline-related activities such as program evaluation, curriculum design, and outcomes assessment and evaluation.
  • Provide support to the program and clinical coordinator as needed.
  • Faculty members are expected to serve on departmental, campus, and/or college committees, hold office hours, advise students, participate in course and program assessment, and maintain an active personal program of professional development and continuous learning.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree Associate degree in Surgical Technology from an accredited institution.
  • Must hold the credential of certified surgical technologist from a national credentialing organization that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA) specifically National Board on Surgical Assisting and Surgical Assistants (NBSTSA), or Certified Surgical Technologist or joint Certified Surgical Technologist/Certified First Assistant.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of current experience in the operating room in a scrub role or three (3) years of current experience as an instructor of surgical technology or a combination of both within the past five (5) years.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in instructional methodology, curriculum design, and program planning.
  • Demonstrated excellence in classroom instruction using a variety of teaching methods.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive and equitable teaching practices and support of a diverse student population.
  • Experience integrating technology into course delivery including the use of a Learning Management System.
  • Applicants must be able to travel within the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area to visit clinical sites affiliated with the program.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience utilizing high-impact teaching pedagogies to foster student engagement and active learning.
  • Experience supporting students through extracurricular activities or community outreach.
  • Knowledge of Clinical Placement Processes.
  • Evidence of commitment to professional development and scholarly activities.
  • Experience supporting students to overcome barriers to academic success.

Hiring Range: $64,510 - $98,220

  • If you are already retired from the Maryland State Retirement System, you may not enroll in a Maryland State Retirement System plan at Montgomery College and may have earnings restrictions, per state law.
