Job description

Position Overview

Montgomery College, Germantown campus, is seeking a full-time Political Science faculty member to fill a position starting Spring 2027.

This faculty member will have the opportunity to teach a range of Political Science classes, including American Government, Comparative Politics & Government, and International Relations. The faculty member will also provide advising support to the International Studies AA Program. This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. The successful candidate will appreciate teaching in a multi-cultural environment and will welcome the opportunity to work with students with diverse learning abilities.

Teaching Responsibilities
  • Classroom instruction, assessment, curriculum development, advising, professional inquiry, committee work and utilizing instructional technology.
  • Teaching assignments may include various delivery modes, such as face-to-face, online, hybrid, and/or blended formats during days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Faculty may be assigned to teach in-person at any of Montgomery College's campuses and teach online.
  • Teacher a variety of Political Science courses offered by the discipline, with an emphasis on teaching American Government, Comparative Politics & Government, and International Relations.
  • Teach early morning, evening, weekend, off-campus, remote, or online courses.
  • Teach 30 semester hours per academic year.
  • Opportunities may exist for faculty to teach summer and winter.
  • Serve on department, campus and college-wide committees, advise students for the International Studies AA Program, provide leadership to student clubs, maintain an active program of professional development, and participate in professional organizations and activities.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Political Science or closely related field.
  • Graduate coursework must include courses that reflect both depth and breadth in Political Science.
  • Experience or professional development training on working with a diverse student population.
  • Experience or professional development training on effective technology use in the classroom.
  • Proficiency with and ability to use a Learning Management System (LMS) and other web-based instructional technology to facilitate learning in a web-enhanced environment.
  • Faculty members are expected to have access to a personal computer with virus protection that can connect to the internet outside of the work location (i.e., office, classroom, college campus).
  • Montgomery College (MC) provides an MC e-mail account and access to the learning platform, password-protected faculty sections of the website, college listservs, and other faculty communications tools.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in Political Science or closely related field.
  • Graduate credit hours in another teaching discipline (such as History, Philosophy, or Women’s and Gender Studies, etc.).
  • Experience with academic advising.
  • Currency in content and pedagogy in Political Science; at least one year of teaching experience in this or a related discipline at the college or secondary level.
  • Community college teaching experience and a commitment to the community college mission.
  • Experience working with dual enrollment student populations.
  • Competence in web-based or other distance education courses.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive and equitable teaching practices and support of a diverse student population.
  • Experience supporting students to overcome barriers to academic success.
Compensation

Hiring Range: $64,510 -$98,220 annually.

Employment Conditions
  • At the time of hire: Successful completion of a background check and degree verification (if applicable).
  • Participation in a retirement plan (Pension or Optional Retirement Plan, depending on the position).
  • If you are already retired from the Maryland State Retirement System, you may not enroll in a Maryland State Retirement System plan at Montgomery College and may have earnings restrictions, per state law.
