Job summary

Tacoma Public Schools is seeking a dedicated middle school athletics coach to teach fundamental skills, strategy, and training to student athletes. The role emphasizes safety, discipline, and clear communication with parents about schedules and district policies.

The position requires a high school diploma and at least two years of assistant coaching experience, plus First Aid and CPR certifications. You’ll work after school with young athletes and help develop their potential across sports.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent and a minimum of two years of experience as an assistant coach; must be at least 21 years of age.

Responsibilities

• Supervise student athletes to promote effective student learning through participation in athletic activities.
• Plan, develop and implement an effective program for the particular sport to prepare athletes both physically and mentally to participate with confidence and self‑assurance in athletic contests; formulate behavioral objectives for the coming sports season; administers discipline when necessary in a fair and consistent manner; emphasizes safety; provides opportunities for each participant to achieve some success; informs participants prior to season about the district’s policies and regulations and extracurricular activity contract.
• Organizes practice sessions that are both stimulating and instructive; conducts practice with 7th and 8th grade teams four days a week and 6th grade teams two days a week; teaches basic fundamental skills; maintains daily activity plans and records; emphasizes good sportsmanship.
• Assumes responsibility for all phases of the program involving coordination of facility use; follows district procedures for budgeting and equipment purchases; handles injuries per district procedures; maintains injury records with the athletic director.
• Informs students and parents of eligibility and rules for the sport; posts rules and issues them to each participant.
• Establishes an effective system for issuing equipment and maintaining records; conducts weekly safety checks; ensures return of equipment; completes inventories.
• Makes written recommendations to building athletic director regarding program, facilities and transportation problems; assists in achieving program objectives.
