  • Must possess an Electrical Journeyman license or Master Electrical License.

Responsibilities

Description Of Duties/Essential Functions

The Electrical Inspector coordinates the enforcement and application of various codes, ordinances and technical specifications for electrical systems to ensure conformance with electrical plans and specifications. Performs investigations of unpermitted electrical work and issues citations or seeks supervisory assistance with regard to unlicensed contractors or individuals. Performs electrical inspections, identifies problem areas with electrical systems, serves correction notices and recommends solutions based on applicable electrical codes and ordinances. Meets with the general public, contractors, technical professionals and businesses to respond to inquiries and technical problems related to electrical systems. Performs record keeping activities to maintain filing systems, reports and documentation. Researches and evaluates electrical plans, specifications and drawings. Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

This position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis.

This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier II Level.

Minimum Requirements
  • EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
    Requires a High School Diploma or G.E.D. and up to 18 months of education or training in the area of inspection to be performed.
  • Experience Requirements

Preferences
  • Preference will be given to applicants who possess an electrical journeyman level or higher electrical license.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with valid ICC, ICBO or IAEI Inspector's Certificate.
  • Preference may also be given to applicants who can obtain said certification and/or licensing within 11 months of employment.
  • Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
General Information

SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED: None. However, the Department may administer a skill assessment evaluation.

SAFETY IMPACT POSITION: Yes. If yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.

Salary Information

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.

Pay Grade - 18

  • Retention: Eligible for award of up to $3000.00, upon completion of 24 months employment
  • Relocation: Eligible for incentive of up to $1000.00, upon submission of qualifying receipts
  • Certification: Eligible for annual incentives of up to $3900.00, upon acquisition of eligible certifications
  • Step Increase: Salary adjusted by 3.1% upon start of 3rd year of employment
  • Salary adjusted by 2.8% upon start of 5th year of employment
