Job summary

The King County Council is seeking an Inspector General to lead an independent agency focused on integrity, accountability, and financial stewardship within King County's legislature.

As director, you will oversee investigations, inspections, and oversight of fraud, waste, and procurement integrity, reporting to the Chair and coordinating with the Ombuds and Auditor. This executive role requires autonomy, political acumen, and impeccable judgment.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in law, compliance, public administration, public policy, accounting/finance, business, or a closely related discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in investigations, fraud examination, government audits, law enforcement investigations, or accountability/compliance.
  • Must include at least 4 years directly managing professional staff or leading a major investigatory program.

Responsibilities

  • Lead independent investigations into fraud, waste, abuse, procurement misconduct, and asset misuse.
  • Hotline & Intake management: establish and manage reporting mechanisms; triage complaints.
  • Targeted inspections: conduct proactive compliance and risk inspections across County contracts, grants, procurements, and programs.
  • Investigative authority: exercise subpoena power and coordinate with authorities as needed.
  • Referrals & recovery: refer matters to appropriate authorities and seek recovery of funds.
  • Agency operations: establish and administer the Office of the Inspector General and set priorities.
  • Team management: recruit, supervise, and evaluate staff.
  • Budget & work planning: manage budgets, contracts, and annual reports; brief Councilmembers.
  • Engagement: build relationships with Ombuds Director, County Auditor, Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and external oversight bodies.
