Job summary

The King County Council invites applications for the position of Inspector General. This executive role leads independent investigations and oversight to promote integrity, accountability, and stewardship of public resources, with a primary focus on the financial integrity of County operations.

The Inspector General is a high-profile position appointed for an initial five-year term, reporting to the Council and working with the Ombuds Director and other executive offices.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in law, compliance, public administration, public policy, accounting/finance, business.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible investigations, audits, or accountability work.
  • Leadership experience: at least 4 years managing professional staff or leading a major program.

Responsibilities

  • Lead independent investigations into fraud, waste, abuse, and procurement misconduct.
  • Oversee complaint management, hotline triage, and referrals to authorities as needed.
  • Conduct targeted inspections of contracts, grants, and procurement to identify risks.
  • Exercise investigative authority and cooperate with external oversight bodies.
  • Develop policies, budget plans, and strategic work programs for the office.
