Job summary

Hill International is seeking an Inspector in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to work on-site during night shifts, Monday-Thursday PM. The role requires inspecting construction stages, interpreting plans, and ensuring compliance with codes, safety rules, and project specs.

The candidate should have a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering or Construction Management, 5+ years in transit/rail projects, and strong MS Office skills, including Excel, Word, and SharePoint. A valid driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of project experience in transit or rail construction.
  • Strong understanding of construction methods, standards, equipment, quality and safety per state and federal requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word and SharePoint.
  • Experience using mobile devices such as iPads for reporting.
  • Ability to interpret plans, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains daily activity logs and reports with photographs.
  • Review or prepare interim progress reports for contractor payments.
  • Monitors contractor-testing activities.
  • Prepares reports on labor, material, and equipment on site.
  • Determines construction conforms to plans and specifications.
  • Conducts quality surveillance of specific quality related activities.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe work environment and safety compliance.
  • Provide Construction Safety and Security field services as directed.
  • Coordinate preparation of inspection survey reports, cost estimates and maintenance records.
  • Timely submittals of these reports and records.
  • Oversee inspections such as electrical, landscaping, soil testing, concrete, and asphalt mixes.
  • Coordinate test laboratory activities with on-site Quality Management and Contractor’s QC teams.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects each stage of construction up to completion.
  • Interprets plans, specifications, and codes and verifies contract work is performed in accordance with all applicable governing codes and regulations.
  • Monitors construction sites for safety violations.
  • Prepares Non-Conformance Reports when work is not performed to the approved standards.
  • Maintains daily activity logs and reports with photographs, in a manner agreed prior to the work.
  • Review or prepare interim progress reports for contractor payments.
  • Monitors contractor-testing activities.
  • Prepares reports on labor, material, and equipment on site.
  • Determines construction conforms to plans and specifications.
  • Conducts quality surveillance of specific quality related activities as necessary.
  • Assist in maintaining, supporting, and promoting a safe work environment while complying with safety rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide Construction Safety and Security field services, as directed, including but not limited to Site Safety and Security Reviews including for Construction Equipment, Personnel, Work Procedures and Traffic Control.
  • Coordinate preparation of inspection survey reports, cost estimates and maintenance records.
  • Timely submittals of these reports and records.
  • Arranges, coordinates and oversees technical inspections such as electrical, landscaping, soil testing, concrete, and asphalt mixes, and reinforcing steel for conformance to specification requirements.
  • Coordinates test laboratory activities with onsite Quality Management team as well as Contractor’s Quality Control team.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors in Civil Engineering or Construction Management preferred.
  • 5+ years of project experience in transit or rail construction.
  • Strong understanding of construction methods, standards, equipment, quality and safety per state and federal requirements.
  • Candidate should have strong computing skills including competency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Excel, Word and SharePoint.
  • Experience using mobile devices, such as iPads, for reporting preferred.
  • Ability to interpret plans, specifications, special provisions, and other contract documents.
  • Ability to independently identify potential problems and propose solutions.
  • Sufficient communication skills both written and oral.
  • Valid driver’s license.
