Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Construction Inspector to provide field inspection, construction oversight, and detailed documentation for emergency water main and sewer repair projects throughout New York City primarily in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

The Construction Inspector will work closely with the Resident Engineer and project team to verify that emergency construction activities are performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved plans, specifications, utility standards, construction practices, and applicable NYC regulations.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in NYC infrastructure construction inspection, particularly projects involving sanitary sewers, storm sewers, and water mains. Experience with NYCDEP projects is highly preferred.

This is a field-oriented position requiring strong attention to detail, the ability to interpret construction drawings and specifications, and the ability to accurately document contractor activities, materials, labor, equipment, quantities, safety conditions, and project progress.

Key Responsibilities
Construction Inspection & Field Oversight
  • Perform daily on-site inspections of construction activities associated with emergency water main and sewer repair projects.
  • Monitor contractor work to ensure compliance with:
    • Approved construction plans
    • Project specifications
    • Construction schedules
    • Safety requirements
    • Utility standards
    • Applicable codes and regulations
  • Verify that construction activities are performed in accordance with approved construction practices and project requirements.
  • Monitor contractor personnel, equipment, materials, and construction operations.
  • Confirm quantities and materials delivered to the project site.
Daily Reporting & Documentation
  • Prepare comprehensive daily construction inspection reports documenting:
    • Work performed
    • Contractor labor
    • Equipment utilized
    • Materials received and verified
    • Construction quantities
    • Contractor activities
    • Site conditions
    • Issues and deficiencies
  • Maintain accurate and organized project records and inspection documentation.
  • Document field conditions, deviations, and changes from approved plans or specifications.
  • Provide timely field information to the Resident Engineer and project management team.
Safety & Compliance
  • Identify unsafe conditions, construction hazards, code violations, and other potential safety concerns.
  • Monitor contractor compliance with applicable safety requirements.
  • Ensure identified deficiencies and unsafe conditions are addressed appropriately.
  • Escalate significant safety or compliance concerns to the Resident Engineer.
  • Support a strong culture of safety throughout the project.
Project Progress & Schedule Monitoring
  • Assist the Resident Engineer in monitoring contractor progress.
  • Compare actual field progress against project schedules.
  • Identify potential schedule impacts and delays.
  • Document contractor delays, field conditions, and other issues affecting project progress.
  • Provide accurate and timely information to support project management and decision-making.
Coordination & Communication
  • Communicate inspection findings and field observations to the Resident Engineer.
  • Coordinate with contractors, subcontractors, project staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Assist with construction coordination and project-related activities as directed.
  • Perform additional inspection, documentation, coordination, and project support duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Education / Certification
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably Civil Engineering, from an accredited college or university; or
  • NICET Highway Construction Inspection Certification - Level II.
Candidates Must Meet One Of The Following Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably Civil Engineering, from an accredited college or university; OR
  • NICET Highway Construction Inspection Certification - Level II.
Professional Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in NYC construction inspection or construction management.
  • Experience must include infrastructure projects involving:
    • Water mains
    • Sanitary sewers
    • Storm sewers
    • Utility infrastructure
  • NYCDEP experience is highly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of field construction inspection practices and infrastructure rehabilitation/repair.

Work Environment & Schedule

This is a field-based construction inspection position supporting emergency infrastructure projects throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan, New York.

The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday; however nighttime and weekend work may be required based on emergency repair activities and project requirements.

The position may require frequent travel between project sites and working in active construction environments.

Compensation

$60.00 - $70.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is an experienced NYC Construction Inspector / Civil Inspector with at least five years of infrastructure inspection experience and a strong understanding of water main, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer construction.

Candidates with NYCDEP experience will be particularly attractive. The successful candidate should be comfortable working directly in the field, reviewing drawings and specifications, documenting contractor activities, identifying safety and quality issues, and communicating findings to the Resident Engineer.
