Job summary

Indiana University Health is hiring a Behavioral Health Counselor (MS) for an inpatient unit at Bloomington Hospital. The role involves psychosocial assessment, individual/group/family counseling, and discharge planning within a 24-bed adult unit.

The counselor will collaborate with psychiatry, nursing, therapy teams, and care management to support patient stabilization and recovery, handling crises and complex social needs with evidence-based practices.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in a mental health field required.
• License eligible in Indiana as LCSW/LMHC/LMFT/LCAC; permanent LSW/LMHC-A/LMFT-A upon hire.
• 0–3 years of relevant experience.
• Knowledge of CBT, MI, DBT.
• BLS certification may be required.

Responsibilities

• Facilitates patient involvement in the treatment milieu.
• Provides individual, group, and family counseling.
• Assists with utilization review and discharge planning.
• Collaborates with the health care team to ensure safe and timely care.
• Assesses psychosocial risk factors and plans accordingly.
• Counsels patients and families on emotional, social, and financial aspects of illness.
• Connects with family/community resources to meet needs.
• Provides mental health assessments on physician referral.
• Supports complex discharge planning.
• Acts as liaison with child/adult protective services.
• Manages guardianship, foster care, and related placements.
