Job summary

The State of South Carolina is seeking a Classification Officer to evaluate inmate records and determine eligibility for institutional assignments, custody changes, jobs, and treatment programs. The role includes chairing the institutional classification committee and coordinating a caseload of about 250 inmates.

The position requires overseeing progress reviews, interviewing inmates, and responding to inquiries from department officials. Training is provided upon hire.

Qualifications

• High school diploma with related experience or a bachelor’s degree substituted for experience.
• Experience evaluating inmate records and determining eligibility for custody changes and programs.
• Ability to interview inmates and coordinate classification activities.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate inmate records, both automated and manual, to determine eligibility for assignments.
• Serve as chairperson of the institutional classification committee.
• Coordinate an equitable classification system for about 250 inmates.
• Conduct periodic reviews of inmate progress and respond to inquiries from officials.
