Job summary

Penn Medicine is seeking a Lead Pharmacist to oversee daily pharmacy operations, staffing, and performance improvement within the assigned area. You will ensure compliance with policies and regulatory requirements while maintaining high-quality patient care.

The role requires a PA-licensed Pharmacist with hospital pharmacy experience; residency years may count toward experience. This position emphasizes leadership, operations oversight, and cross-functional collaboration within Penn Medicine.

Qualifications

  • Pharmacist license in PA (required).
  • Graduate degree in pharmacy (PharmD or equivalent) with hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Residency years count towards experience when applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and supervise daily pharmacy workflow for assigned area throughout the shift ensuring all assigned work is completed and / or transitioned appropriately to the next shift.
  • Resolve staff and operational issues, and communicate to upper-level management as needed.
  • Manage technology issues and appropriately elevate as needed.
  • Manage staff coverage and attendance, ensuring appropriate coverage by contacting staff for replacements and redistributing tasks as needed.
  • Establish daily goals for the designated team to ensure performance is achieved in a timely manner; address staff performance as necessary.
  • Manage purchasing and inventory issues including loaning/borrowing medications and handling controlled drug orders.
  • Review, evaluate, and approve or deny non-formulary requests when Drug Information services are unavailable.
  • Access outpatient pharmacy after-hours as needed.
  • Complete shift sign-out with concise listing of categories such as loaned/borrowed meds, sick calls, schedule changes, etc.
  • Participate in PennChart IT testing when necessary.
  • Conduct nursing orientation sessions as needed.
  • Maintain competency as a clinical pharmacist and function in multiple areas of the department.

Education

Pharmacist degree (PharmD or equivalent)
Bachelor of Arts or Science (Required)
