Information Technology Technician – County of Erie, PA

Definition of Class
  • This position provides end-user support for our computer network infrastructure, involving the installation, modification, and repair of both hardware and software systems, all under the guidance of the Library IT Manager. Additionally, the IT Help Desk Technician will provide training and technical assistance to users.
Nature of Work
  • This role primarily focuses on delivering desktop and end‑user support to various County locations. The position may require work at different County locations based on needs and workload. Key responsibilities include:
  • Providing support for desktops and client‑side peripherals.
  • Assisting end‑users with hardware and software issues.
  • Installing, upgrading, and maintaining hardware and software.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving network connectivity issues.
  • Assisting with end‑user training.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Offering technical support to users, which involves hardware and software installation, hardware/software upgrades, problem resolution, preventative maintenance, and help desk support.
  • Travel to public libraries within the Erie/Crawford District.
  • Staying up to date with the latest hardware and software developments and making purchase recommendations to the IT Manager.
  • Investigating and resolving PC security issues.
  • Assisting in user training and participating in network development, implementation, and upgrades.
  • Administering servers and network security, including Active Directory, firewalls, file shares, email, Wi‑Fi, and related technologies.
  • As a secondary responsibility, you will serve as a backup system operator for the Library’s circulation and online catalog when the primary operator is absent. Duties include performing backups, compiling reports, communicating problems to the system’s support desk, maintaining a problem log, and data entry, among other duties assigned by the Library IT Manager.

  • Knowledge of data processing equipment maintenance and operation.
  • Familiarity with various network and computer diagnostic equipment.
  • Proficiency in Windows Operating Systems and the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with Windows Server, Active Directory, and Group Policy.
  • Competence in networking, servers, and workstations in a Windows environment.
  • Understanding of wireless environments, printers, mobile/handheld devices, and other peripherals.
  • Knowledge of security and anti‑virus applications.
  • The ability to operate tools, components, and testing accessories.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong critical‑thinking and analytical abilities.
  • A solid grasp of the organization’s goals and objectives.
  • Capability to conduct research into emerging technologies.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field, or Technical Degree, or 2 years of Experience in a Progressive IT Environment
