Organizational context

The UNMAS Syria Programme, based in Damascus, is a key coordinator of humanitarian mine action, enabling safe access for UN operations and working with the Syrian Government. It plays a central role in reducing harm from explosive ordnance (EO) contamination, which affects over 14.3 million Syrians, by providing risk education, victim assistance, survey, and clearance.

Job purpose

The Information Management and Analytics Analyst supports the UNMAS Syria Programme by ensuring the availability and accuracy of data crucial for programmatic and operational activities. This role is vital for effective decision-making and the successful implementation of mine action strategies. By maintaining and improving database structures, managing data quality, and coordinating data sharing with stakeholders, the analyst directly contributes to mitigating the risks posed by explosive ordnance and supporting survivors, thereby enhancing the overall impact of humanitarian efforts in Syria.

Responsibilities

The Information Management and Analytics Analyst will assist in developing the Information Management (IM) function, including supporting the upscaling or downscaling of the IM Unit structure and identifying gaps and opportunities. Key duties involve supporting the design, maintenance, and improvement of database structures, defining and documenting IM processes with a focus on data management, and contributing to IM Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The role includes ensuring database administration, data validation, cleaning, compliance, imports, backups, and quality checks, as well as supporting data collection tools. The analyst will coordinate with stakeholders to ensure timely data availability and provide datasets and reporting outputs. Additionally, the role supports the development of the national mine action database, including data migration, and assists in delivering technical IM training to stakeholders.

Education

An Advanced University Degree (Master's or equivalent) in Information Technology, Information Management, Computer Science, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a First-level university degree (Bachelor's or equivalent) with two years of relevant experience, or a High School Diploma with six years of relevant experience, is acceptable.

Work experience

Required experience includes providing information management support, working with database systems, and managing data quality. Proficiency in data modeling, validation rules, cleaning, administration, and SQL/PostgreSQL is essential. Experience with GIS tools for spatial analysis and producing maps is also required, along with experience in designing and delivering technical training. Desired experience includes producing dashboards, supporting mine action IM, working with IMSMA or ArcGIS, and collaborating with governmental institutions or NGOs.
