Job description

Industrial Process Safety Engineer / Senior Industrial Process Safety Engineer

Remote Full-Time

ABOUT HARRINGTON GROUP, INC.

HGI is a leading fire protection engineering and consulting firm helping industrial and manufacturing clients manage the risks posed by combustible dust, chemical processes, and hazardous materials. We are looking for Industrial Process Safety Engineers/Consultants and Senior Industrial Process Safety Engineers/Consultants to bring technical expertise to complex client engagements, mentor a growing team, and help clients satisfy applicable codes and standards while making informed business decisions. This job posting covers both our Industrial Process Safety Engineer/Consultant and Senior Industrial Process Safety Engineer/Consultant positions. The level and title you are hired into will be determined by your experience and licensure.

This is an opportunity to deepen your technical expertise in chemical process safety, hazardous materials, and explosion protection engineering, and to build your engineering judgment as a trusted advisor to clients operating complex industrial and manufacturing facilities. If you're a highly motivated engineer or consultant who thrives in a collaborative, remote-friendly environment, we want to hear from you.

This posting covers two title tracks. Candidates with a P.E. license hold the title Industrial Process Safety Engineer, or Senior Industrial Process Safety Engineer at the senior level. All other candidates hold the title Industrial Process Safety Consultant, or Senior Industrial Process Safety Consultant at the senior level.

ROLE HIGHLIGHTS
  • -Client & Stakeholder Relationship Management: You will build and maintain trusted client relationships, advising client leadership on process safety risk posture and recommended solutions so they can make informed business decisions. You will communicate directly with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (“AHJs”), insurers, and other project stakeholders, leading engagement and negotiating acceptance of alternative methods and equivalencies as your experience grows.
  • -Hazard Analysis & Code Compliance: You will evaluate chemical inventories, safety data sheets, and process documentation to classify hazards, and perform or lead Dust Hazard Analyses (“DHAs”) in accordance with NFPA 660, 652, 654, 61, 484, and 664. You will analyze chemical processes and inventories against applicable building and fire codes and nationally recognized standards, and develop alternative methods of code compliance.
  • -Explosion & Fire Protection Design: You will develop practical, defensible protection and mitigation strategies using engineering, administrative, and operational controls for systems such as deflagration venting, explosion suppression, isolation, containment, and detection, establishing the recommended Best Total Solution based on cost/benefit analysis and client needs.
  • -Mentorship & Professional Growth: You will work alongside senior and junior team members in a culture of technical mentorship. As your experience grows, you will train and provide technical review to less experienced engineers and consultants, and help establish the standards, templates, and procedures that shape the quality of our growing Industrial Process Safety practice.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • -Build and maintain trusted relationships with client personnel, serving as a technical point of contact on assigned projects and advising client leadership on process safety risk posture and recommended solutions.
  • -Communicate and lead engagement with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (“AHJs”), insurers, and other project stakeholders, negotiating acceptance of alternative methods and equivalencies.
  • -Evaluate chemical inventories, safety data sheets (“SDS”), and material test reports to classify flammable and combustible liquids, gases, oxidizers, combustible dusts, and other hazardous materials.
  • -Review process flow diagrams (“PFDs”), piping and instrumentation diagrams (“P&IDs”), control narratives, and engineering drawings to identify required fire and explosion protection measures and resolve conflicts among them.
  • -Perform, document, and review Dust Hazard Analyses (“DHAs”) in accordance with applicable standards, including NFPA 660, 652, 654, 61, 484, and 664.
  • -Conduct process hazard evaluations and engineering calculations to determine hazard severity and the adequacy of proposed protection options.
  • -Develop protection options and recommend the Best Total Solution based on cost/benefit analysis and client needs.
  • -Perform and review design tasks and calculations for fire and explosion protection systems, including deflagration venting, explosion suppression, isolation, containment, and detection.
  • -Analyze chemical processes and inventories against applicable codes and standards, render code interpretations, and develop alternative methods of code compliance.
  • -Perform field surveys, direct or assist with system inspections and acceptance testing, and support post-incident evaluations and responses to regulatory or insurance inquiries.
  • -Prepare reports, letters, specifications, and client presentations that are accurate, complete, and delivered within schedule and budget expectations.
  • -Train and mentor junior engineers and consultants, provide technical review of their work, and help establish standards, templates, and procedures that improve practice quality.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • -Strong to advanced technical knowledge of chemical process safety, hazardous materials, and combustible dust hazard evaluation, with the judgment to resolve complex or contested technical positions.
  • -Demonstrated ability to lead client engagements and represent HGI's Core Values of Service, Competence, Quality, Honesty, Integrity, and Respect with clients, insurers, and AHJs, including the ability to provide junior engineers and consultants with technical oversight, review, and mentorship.

  • -U.S. citizenship or valid work visa required.
  • -Willingness to travel to client sites for site visits and field assessments at industrial facilities, typically 10 to 30% depending on project phase.
WHY JOIN HGI?
  • -Work on impactful projects: Our Industrial Process Safety Engineers and Consultants help clients across a wide range of industrial and manufacturing environments protect their people, property, and operations from fire, explosion, and chemical process hazards.
  • -Mentorship and advancement: We provide guidance, training, and leadership development to help you grow, with opportunities to mentor others as you advance in your career.
  • -A culture of collaboration and innovation: We take pride in being a remote-friendly firm that values teamwork and work-life balance.
  • -Competitive compensation and benefits: The base salary range for this posting is $100,000 to $155,000 per year, spanning our Industrial Process Safety Engineer/Consultant through Senior Industrial Process Safety Engineer/Consultant levels.
