Job description

Senior Property Loss Control Engineer / Consultant

Remote (U.S. Based) Full Time

HGI is a leading fire protection engineering and consulting firm helping clients protect the assets that matter most to their businesses. We are seeking a Senior Property Loss Control Engineer / Consultant to bring expertise to high-profile client engagements, mentor our growing team, and empower our clients to thoughtfully and proactively manage the risk of property damage and disrupted operations from perils such as fire and natural hazards.

You will leverage your technical expertise, consulting skills, and knowledge of the methods, language, objectives and priorities of Highly-Protected Risk (“HPR”) property insurers to independently evaluate the analysis, risk improvement recommendations, and Loss Expectancies (“LEs”) presented by insurance carrier property risk engineers and third-party consultants. You will serve as a client advocate, developing alternative risk-reduction solutions grounded in sound engineering judgment and cost/benefit analysis and negotiating their acceptance with insurers and other stakeholders.

You will review complex project submittals and provide guidance on property protection based on nationally recognized standards, industry best practices, and internal property loss control standards. You will advise on the resolution of costly, disruptive or contested risk improvement recommendations issued by other stakeholders to address property risks. You will also develop and review design specifications for fire protection systems and advise client project teams and their contractors and other consultants on large projects from pre-construction through commissioning.

Site Surveys & Client Training

You will lead complex site surveys, fire hazard analyses, water supply evaluations, and property loss incident investigations and lead the development and delivery of client training on human element programs such as hot work management, impairment management, and fire protection system inspection, testing, and maintenance.

You will provide technical mentorship to less experienced PLC engineers and consultants, including field oversight and review of their work products. Your leadership will help shape the technical standards and service quality of our growing PLC practice.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to client personnel from site-level staff through corporate risk management leadership
  • Provide technical leadership on client engagements and independently manage client communications, priorities, and expectations related to the delivery of quality engineering and consulting services
  • Provide independent assessments of insurer property loss control reports, recommendations, and Loss Expectancies (“LEs”)
  • Advise on recommendation priority based on frequency, severity, and risk-reduction return on investment
  • Develop alternative risk-reduction solutions with anticipated implementation costs, and negotiate acceptance with property insurers and other stakeholders
  • Provide client representation and advocacy during insurer property loss control surveys and discussions
  • Review project submittals and technical reviews performed by others, and resolve complex or contested recommendations addressing property risks from fire and natural hazards
  • Establish and review design specifications for construction and fire protection systems for new or modified facilities
  • Lead engagements with client project teams and their contractors from pre-construction through commissioning for commercial and industrial facilities
  • Lead complex site surveys, fire hazard analyses, water supply evaluations, and property loss incident investigations, including summary reports and lessons learned
  • Lead development and delivery of client training on human element programs, such as hot work management, impairment management, and fire protection system inspection, testing, and maintenance
  • Provide technical mentorship and development of less experienced PLC engineers and consultants, including field oversight, technical review of work products, and contribution to training programs
  • Assist with the development and documentation of processes, procedures, and service standards that advance the quality and efficiency of the PLC practice
  • Demonstrated ability to lead client engagements and represent HGI’s Core Values of Service, Competence, Quality, Honesty, Integrity, and Respect with clients, insurers, and authorities
  • Advanced technical depth in both fire protection engineering and property loss control engineering
  • Proven ability to lead and manage complex client engagements, including mentorship of less experienced engineers and consultants
  • Sound engineering judgment and cost/benefit analysis skills to evaluate insurer recommendations and develop alternative risk-reduction solutions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of engaging clients, insurers, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs)
  • Ability to thrive in a remote work environment while maintaining strong client and team collaboration
  • Willingness to travel to client sites, both domestic and international, averaging up to 25% overnight travel
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Engineering (Fire Protection, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, etc.)
  • 8+ years of relevant experience, including PLC engineering with a major industrial property insurance underwriter, “unbundled” property loss control services provider, or insurance brokerage firm serving Highly-Protected Risk (“HPR”) clients across a range of commercial and industrial properties
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred; candidates with a P.E. license take the title Senior Property Loss Control Engineer; all other candidates take the title Senior Property Loss Control Consultant
  • U.S. Citizen or valid work visa required
  • Strong technical foundation, with a focus on precision, sound engineering judgment, and client-focused execution
