HGI is a leading fire protection engineering and consulting firm helping industrial and manufacturing clients manage the risks posed by combustible dust, chemical processes, and hazardous materials. We are seeking an Industrial Process Safety Engineer or Consultant to join our growing team and work alongside senior staff who provide mentorship as you build your expertise in chemical process safety, hazardous materials, and explosion protection engineering to help clients satisfy applicable codes and standards while making informed business decisions.

This position is offered under two titles: Industrial Process Safety Engineer, held by candidates with a P.E. license, or Industrial Process Safety Consultant, held by all other candidates.

Client & Stakeholder Relationship Management

You will build trusted client relationships through consistent, reliable service and advise clients on process safety risks and recommended solutions so they can make informed business decisions. You will also communicate directly with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (“AHJs”), insurers, and other project stakeholders.

You will evaluate chemical inventories, safety data sheets, and process documentation to classify hazards, and perform Dust Hazard Analyses (“DHAs”) in accordance with NFPA 660, 652, 654, 61, 484, and 664. You will also analyze chemical processes and inventories against applicable building and fire codes and nationally recognized standards.

You will develop practical, defensible protection and mitigation strategies using engineering, administrative, and operational controls, including systems such as deflagration venting, explosion suppression, isolation, containment, and detection.

Professional Growth

You will deliver client engagements with guidance and technical review from senior staff, building direct client relationships and growing your technical depth in chemical processes, hazardous materials, and combustible dust hazards.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain trusted relationships with client personnel through consistent, reliable service, and advise clients on process safety risks so they can make informed business decisions
  • Communicate with AHJs, insurers, and other project stakeholders on assigned projects
  • Evaluate chemical inventories, safety data sheets ("SDS"), and material test reports to classify flammable/combustible liquids, gases, oxidizers, combustible dusts, and other hazardous materials
  • Review process flow diagrams ("PFDs"), piping and instrumentation diagrams ("P&IDs"), control narratives, and engineering drawings to identify required fire and explosion protection measures
  • Perform and document Dust Hazard Analyses ("DHAs") in accordance with applicable standards, including NFPA 660, 652, 654, 61, 484, and 664
  • Conduct process hazard evaluations and engineering calculations to determine hazard severity and the adequacy of proposed protection options
  • Develop protection options, and recommend the Best Total Solution based on cost/benefit analysis and client needs
  • Perform design tasks and calculations for fire and explosion protection systems, including deflagration venting, explosion suppression, isolation, containment, and detection
  • Analyze chemical processes and inventories against applicable codes and standards, and research alternative methods of code compliance
  • Perform field surveys, assist with system inspections and acceptance testing, and support post-incident evaluations and regulatory or insurance inquiries
  • Prepare reports, letters, specifications, and client presentations that are accurate, complete, and delivered within schedule and budget expectations
  • Strong technical knowledge of chemical process safety, hazardous materials, and combustible dust hazard evaluation
  • Ability to perform confidently and decisively, balancing adherence to standards with creative, impactful client solutions
  • Equally proficient in client service and analytical engineering problem-solving
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with distributed teams
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • B.S. in Engineering (Chemical, Fire Protection, Mechanical, Electrical, etc.), engineering technology, or a related technical field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
