Job summary

Oerlikon Group seeks a skilled Service Technician at our Elgin, IL facility to maintain production equipment and lead maintenance efforts. You will perform preventive maintenance, document tasks, and schedule work to support smooth production flow.

Responsibilities include emergency repairs, safety compliance, and training coating technicians. The role requires an electro-mechanical background with strong teamwork and urgency to minimize downtime.

Qualifications

• AA or equivalent in electro-mechanical discipline.
• 2+ years’ experience with HVAC, vacuum technology, automotive, or industrial equipment repair.
• Ability to interpret mechanical/electrical schematics and troubleshoot.
• Detail-oriented with urgency and safety compliance.
• Available 24/7 for service emergencies.
• Able to lift up to 50 pounds and work on top of machinery with fall protection.

Responsibilities

• Schedule maintenance with production to ensure preventive tasks are performed on time.
• Perform and document preventive maintenance on all equipment.
• Provide emergency equipment repairs to keep production running.
• Comply with equipment standards set by manufacturers.
• Check equipment for shutdowns and create action plans to resolve issues.
• Maintain reliability data on the server and ensure up-to-date records.
• Plan and manage inventory to minimize downtime and control costs.
• Ensure safety practices and clean, organized work area.
• Provide training for coating technicians on load building and maintenance.
• Participate as a key member of the production management team.

Job description

We are seeking a skilled Service Technician to join our team at our Elgin, IL facility. This role is crucial to maintaining and improving the performance of our production equipment, directly impacting overall facility output. The Service Technician will be responsible for performing, documenting, and scheduling maintenance tasks for coating and support equipment within the facility. Duties include executing maintenance procedures as outlined in equipment manuals, managing spare part inventory, and ensuring optimal equipment functionality. Beyond technical responsibilities, this role plays a leadership function, providing guidance and informal coaching to others while potentially overseeing assigned personnel. The Service Technician reports directly to the Center Manager. We are looking for someone who is detail-oriented, proactive, and committed to optimizing production efficiency through effective equipment maintenance and team collaboration.

Your Responsibilities

• Schedule time with production to make sure the preventative maintenance is being performed on time (based on the calendar that was set up with the Area Service Manager)
• Perform and document the preventive maintenance on all equipment within the facility
• Provide emergency equipment repairs in order to production running at all times
• Comply with all equipment standards set in place by the equipment manufactures
• Check the equipment for shutdowns and process interruptions and create an action plan to resolve the issues
• Make sure equipment reliability is within target and data is up-to-date on the server at all times.
• Plan, purchase and maintain proper inventory levels required to minimize downtime, yet control inventory dollars as required.
• Ensure safety measures are met, technicians are practicing safe work habits
• Keep a clean, well-organized work area, including power alleys, support systems and equipment
• Provide training for coating technicians in areas such as load building, batch-to-batch exchanges, and 80 batch maintenance
• Participate as a key member of the management team within the production facility
• Exhibits a sense of urgency in their daily activities when the equipment within their facility is not capable of running production
• Responsible for the completion of Technical Directives and communication of Technical Information within their facility

Your Profile

• 2 year degree (AA) and/or relevant industry certification in an electro-mechanical discipline. Equivalent experience may be substitute.
• 2+ years’ experience working with HVAC, vacuum technology, automotive, and/or industrial equipment repair
• Experience interpreting various mechanical and electrical schematics along with the ability to troubleshoot equipment using schematics
• Must be detailed-oriented with a strong work-ethic and a possess a sense of urgency to be successful
• Must be accessible 24 hours a day to respond to service emergencies which could lead to equipment failure/ downtime
• Must be able to lift an object weighing up to50 pounds.
• Must be able to work on top of machine with fall protection safety device

Oerlikon is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the current compensation range for this position, which is $32.00 to $48.00 per hour. Some positions within Oerlikon may also offer eligibility to participate in a discretionary incentive program. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for the role will be based on a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, internal equity, job location, work experience, education, training, certifications, licenses, etc. Therefore, as compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each individual, it is likely that not all applicants will be hired at the highest end of the listed compensation range. Our total compensation package goes beyond base compensation and it will include a competitive benefits package starting with 2 weeks paid time off accrued on a monthly basis, 12 holidays, 48 hours personal/sick time (exception for NY where we follow State law,) medical, dental, vision, 401K, holidays, pet insurance and tuition reimbursement all effective day one of hire.
