Qualifications

• At least 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with fellow employees, hospital staff, fire departments, rescue squads, police departments, communication centers, management, volunteer fire departments and the general public.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Certification as Firefighter I/II preferred; Facility Fire Brigade training or equivalent within 90 days.
• Pass a background check.
• Successfully complete the department's physical agility requirements.
• AO Pumper requirement within 12 months of hire.
• Complete IS‑100, IS‑200, IS‑700 and IS‑800 within 1 month of hire.
• Preference given to Firefighters who are an EMT Basic, Advanced or Paramedic.
• CPR certification.

Responsibilities

• Respond to emergency and non‑emergency service requests according to Department policies/procedures.
• Attend department training programs covering fire prevention, suppression, rescue, emergency management, EMS, and other related skills.
• Perform assigned shift activities, including equipment checks, apparatus checks and safety inspections.
• Carry out duties safely and report any unsafe or unusual activity and conditions to supervisors.
• Complete necessary reporting and duties prior to the end of the assigned shift.
• Complete project assignments and perform assigned areas of responsibility within a timely manner to meet or exceed deadlines.
• Acquire and retain a thorough knowledge of the service area, interior and exterior, including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items.
• Be available for recall as determined by the Fire Chief.
• Perform all related work as assigned.
• Respond to EMS medical calls as assigned.
• Assist in the planning and evaluation of Department facilities, apparatus and equipment.
• Assist with public education, public relations and promotion of a positive safety culture within the assigned areas.
• Keep work areas, equipment and apparatus clean and orderly.
• Participate in emergency preparedness planning.
• Provide recommendations and supporting documentation to the Fire Chief for department improvements.
• Drive assigned vehicles in accordance with NorthStar’s driving policies.
• Adhere to NorthStar’s and Department specific standard operating procedures.
• Perform other related duties as directed by superiors.
