Job summary

The Massachusetts Commission for the Blind (MCB) seeks a mission-driven Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) to support legally blind individuals in navigating home, work, and community environments.

This role travels at least three days per week in the Northeast region of Massachusetts and requires assessing travel needs, teaching cane skills, dog guide routing, and safe mobility. MCB is an Equal Opportunity Employer offering a supportive work culture.

Qualifications

• Must hold COMS certification from ACVREP.
• Experience with case management principles.
• Knowledge of issues facing visually impaired individuals.
• Strong communication and counseling skills with diverse populations.
• Ability to learn agency policies and manage confidential information.

Responsibilities

• Assess travel needs and develop individualized mobility training plans.
• Teach long cane skills, dog guide routing, and use of public transportation.
• Provide environmental and transportation access guidance to consumers.
• Maintain electronic case files and documentation.
• Participate in falls prevention training when applicable.
