The Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) at BLaST Intermediate Unit 17 in Williamsport, PA, plays a key role in helping visually impaired students gain independence through safe travel inside home, school, and community settings.

Responsibilities include evaluating needs, developing IEP/IFSP goals, providing direct O&M instruction, coordinating canes and devices, and collaborating with staff and families.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Orientation and Mobility
• Current COMS certification (ACVREP) required or preferred

Responsabilités

• Evaluate orientation and mobility needs of visually impaired students.
• Develop and implement IEP/IFSP O&M goals and instructional plans.
• Provide direct O&M instruction and consult with staff, peers, and parents.
• Order, distribute, and maintain canes and low-vision devices.
• Monitor progress with ongoing, criterion-based assessments.
• Assist with travel safety and environmental adaptations.
