Job summary

Department of Labor in Lewiston is seeking a professional to teach individuals who are blind or visually impaired in orientation, mobility and assistive technology solutions. You will assess needs, provide consultations, and guide learners toward independent travel and education or employment goals.

The role involves working under limited supervision, using evidence-based methods, and staying current with AT tools and accessibility trends to support challenging mobility and independence

Qualifications

• Advanced education, training, and/or experience in blind or low vision rehabilitation spanning multiple disciplines.
• Competency in disability assessment, technology solutions, instructional methods, problem solving and communication.
• ACVREP accredited certifications: COMS or CATIS depending on work performed.

Responsibilities

• Assess functional needs using standardized methods and analyze reports to determine accommodations and instruction.
• Teach individuals who are blind or low vision to travel safely and independently using orientation & mobility and AT tools.
• Provide instruction in AT devices and software across home, school and workplace environments.
• Evaluate services to determine feasible training goals and plan training schedules.
• Document needs, progress and activity with evaluation reports and training summaries.
• Develop individualized training plans in collaboration with clients and medical information.
