Job summary

SASED is seeking an Art Therapist/Teacher to provide instruction to students aged 3-22 with developmental and physical disabilities. You will lead the classroom team, support art curriculum, and collaborate with staff to meet individualized goals.

Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Art Therapy, Art Education, or related field, with a possible substitute certification. Preferred ISBE Art endorsement and LBSI endorsement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art Therapy, Art Education, or related Art degree.
  • Or Long Term Substitute Certification with relevant studio, art, or therapy background/experience.
  • ISBE Art endorsement and LBSI endorsement preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide small group instruction in a classroom setting to address the individualized educational needs of each student.
  • Direct the educational support staff to assist in the implementation of the lesson plan.
  • Provide services in a transdisciplinary team, integrated model.
  • Work flexibly with students of varying ability levels.
  • Collaborate with fellow team members in the development of goals and instructional strategies.
  • Implement medical or behavioral plans specific to student needs as necessary.
  • Demonstrate professional work ethic and interpersonal skills to promote a collaborative team effort.
  • Provide in-service and/or workshops as requested by staff.
  • Demonstrate the ability to implement individualized behavior plans created by the classroom team.
  • 184 day work year at compensation set by the SASED Board of Directors.
  • Standing/Walking: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, up to 4-6 hours per day.
  • Sitting: Ability to sit for up to 2-4 hours during instruction or meetings.
  • Lifting/Carrying: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and assist students as needed.
  • Reaching/Grasping: Ability to reach, grasp, and handle materials and classroom equipment.
  • Bending/Stooping: Ability to bend or kneel to assist students and retrieve materials.
  • Vision/Hearing/Speaking: Ability to see, hear, and communicate effectively with students and staff.
  • Dexterity: Ability to write, type, and use teaching tools and technology.
  • Student Assistance: Ability to support students with physical needs or disabilities.
  • Emotional Stamina: Ability to maintain focus and emotional regulation in a dynamic classroom environment.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Art Therapy, Art Education, or related Art degree
