Job summary

AbbVie in Irvine, CA is seeking an in-house Associate General Counsel for our Patent Prosecution group. This role will support AbbVie’s pharmaceutical products and focus on neuroscience, working across cross-functional teams in a hybrid setting (on site 3+ days/week).

You will draft, file, and prosecute patent applications worldwide, manage outside counsel, and guide IP strategy to maximize AbbVie’s competitive position while ensuring regulatory and business objectives.

Qualifications

• JD degree and USPTO registration; in-house practice allowed
• 8+ years of patent law experience at a law firm or life sciences company with US and foreign prosecution
• Technical background in small molecule or biologics; degree in relevant field
• Strong legal, analytical, communication, collaboration, and people skills

Responsibilities

• Maximize IP strategies for AbbVie’s products and candidates
• Provide counsel to R&D and business teams on IP matters
• Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications worldwide with outside counsel
• Challenge and defend patents in post-grant proceedings
• Conduct prior art searches and due diligence for business development
